THE AMERICAN ESSENTIALS FILM FESTIVAL 2018

The third American Essentials Film Festival will screen in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra from 8 May exclusively at Palace Cinemas. Presenting twenty-two of the best contemporary American independent films and a strong retrospective program to honour the spirit of L.A., the Festival is presented by Discover Los Angeles and American Airlines.

Opening nationally with Sophie Brooks’s directorial debut THE BOY DOWNSTAIRS  featuring Girls  star Zosia Mamet as Diana, an ambitious, aspiring writer who finds the perfect Brooklyn apartment only to discover that her new downstairs neighbour is her ex-boyfriend. Join us at the opening night for a New York style bite and live music.

The strong program features hard hitting dramas including: 55 STEPS  – based on the true story of the friendship between lawyer Colette Hughes (Hilary Swank) and psychiatric patient Eleanor Riese (Helena Bonham Carter) and their 1987 San Francisco case for patients’ rights; Lynn Shelton’s new drama OUTSIDE IN  which sees an ex-con (Jay Duplass) struggling to readjust to life in his small town (also co-starring Eddie Falco); in MY DAYS OF MERCY  Ellen Page and Kate Mara star as lovers against the backdrop of a death penalty case, whose burgeoning relationship is tested by their opposing political views; THE YELLOW BIRDS  is based on the acclaimed novel by American poet and veteran Kevin Powers, and follows two young soldiers who face the terrors of the Iraq War; an ailing photographer (Ed Harris), his nurse (Elizabeth Olsen) and his estranged son (Jason Sudeikis) embark on a road-trip across America in KODACHROME ; from the producers of Harry Potter , I KILL GIANTS sees a defiant teenage girl escape her family and school life into a fantasy world where she fights evil giants; and in THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN  Bill Pullman is Lefty Brown in this classic bounty huntin’, revenge dealin’ old school Western adventure where a busted-out loser meets a quick shooting gang on the open range.

Crime dramas and thrillers are well represented with: NEVER HERE  a haunting Lynchian thriller, starring Mireille Enos (The Killing ) and the late Sam Shepard in his last screen appearance; black comedy MOM AND DAD  in which Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star as a suburban couple who are caught in a bizarre phenomenon that fills parents with a murderous rage; and direct from Cannes comes biopic GOTTI . Exuding charisma, John Travolta transforms into the late John Gotti, aka “Teflon Don,” for this chronicle of the mafia kingpin’s rise to power over three decades.

On the lighter side is the heartfelt comedy HUMOR ME  staring Jemaine Clement as a struggling playwright who moves into his wisecracking father’s (Elliott Gould) New Jersey retirement community; and PET NAMES  in which a former couple find themselves in close quarters in a Wisconsin-set feature directed by Carol Brandt.

Get your music fix with AMERICAN FOLK , about two musicians (played by Joe Purdy and Amber Rubarth) stranded in California, who take a road trip to New York in the days after 9/11. A story about the kindness of strangers and the power of music and based on the award-winning Off-Broadway musical, STUCK  follows a group of strangers who are stranded on a New York subway train together, starring Ashanti and Giancarlo Esposito; and documentary HOW THEY GOT OVER  featuring rare interviews with the genre’s pioneers, traces the origins of African-American gospel quartets in the 1930s and 40s creating a sound that foreshadowed rock ‘n’ roll.

Another documentary offering, RBG  is a triumphant look at the life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg revealing the woman behind the robe and the experiences that continue to shape her legacy.

In a special retrospective program that honours the life, loves and dark side of LA comes WATTSTAX.  More than a concert film, WATTSTAX  captures a heady moment in mid-1970s African-American culture, just seven years after the Watts riots and features performances by musical greats like the Staple Singers. Screening as part of a special double feature with KILLER OF SHEEP , the lyrical and starkly neorealist, portrait of a struggling African-American family in L.A.’s Watts neighbourhood influenced generations of filmmakers and is widely regarded as an American masterpiece.

In splendid newly restored 4k, you can re-live the crime saga of HEAT , which sees Al Pacino and Robert De Niro on opposite sides of the law, featuring one of cinema’s greatest showdowns.

Plus see CHINATOWN on the big screen again. In one of his most iconic roles, Jack Nicholson stars as Jake Gittes, a dogged private investigator in ‘30s Los Angeles; co-starring Faye Dunaway. And set on the eve of Nixon’s 1968 election win SHAMPOO  sees a pleasure-seeking Beverly Hills hairdresser (Warren Beatty) dreaming of opening his own salon in Hal Ashby’s screwball classic.

When: 10 ~ 20 May
Where: Palace Cinema Como, Kino Cinemas, Palace Brighton Bay, The Astor Theatre & Palace Westgarth

MICF Review: Perri Cassie “Secondhand Bubblegum”

Melbourne local Perri Cassie is a twenty something man wrapped in a blush pink “Leisure” sweater, all tied up in black dungarees and ready to make you laugh. Cassie has been honing his material in Melbourne’s local comedy scene, in rooms around Australia and has recently returned from entertaining audiences in the USA, bringing all his best material to MICF with his show, “Secondhand Bubblegum”.

Cassie’s show is a complete joke free-for-all, with an upbeat story telling style mixed with self-deprecating quips, shock value and topical observational humour. Stand outs were his hilarious observations on the changes to the order of bases when dating in adult life (why go to home base last?), testing flat earthers, Afterpay for property and the joys of having high school classmates as Facebook friends.

Cassie closes his show with a re-write of your typical men’s body spray ad (where better to start addressing the levels of toxic masculinity in our society) bringing the audience to near tears and joyous rounds of applause.

MICF Review: Tash York “Adulting”

At 30 years young, Tash York is essentially a veteran of the Australian Festival and Fringe scenes, having toured solo shows including “These Things Take Wine” and with troupes The Desperettes and Impromptunes, she now delights audiences with her new show “Adulting”.

If you’ve ever tried to adult and failed, York’s show could be the soundtrack to your life!  York weaves a tapestry of anecdotes into hilarious rewritten cover songs, including hits from Destiny’s Child, Ace of Base, Bruno Mars and Whitesnake. Her stories and songs delve into York’s own adventures in adulting, from being engaged at 19 to racking up serious parking fine debt but also commentary on modern life, always being connected but that we should also be okay with being alone and having some solo self-love time (hilariously sung whilst in a sleeping bag).  York also gives her thoughts on why modern generations are failing at adulting, placing at least some of the blame on Walt Disney’s shoulders, through a medley of Disney princesses greatest hits!

York rounds out the absolute hilarity of her show with a beautiful rendition of Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”, a stunning tribute to her mother, that absolutely captives the audience.

To be honest, York is a cabaret dynamo, with a set of pipes built to smash the high notes and comedic timing that makes her show a perfect mix.  She will charm you and knock your socks off, a Festival must see!

MICF Review: Chimp Cop “The Death of Chimp Cop”

Ben Vernel, Adam Knox, Rosie Vernel and Timothy Clark are Melbourne’s own sketch comedy quadruple “Chimp Cop”.  The group brings their fourth Chimp Cop show to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with “The Death of Chimp Cop”.  This reviewer was familiar with the group by name only and was uncertain what to expect but was blown away by the talent, the gags (ranging from sophisticated to Dad joke) and the production of the show.

As the title would suggest, the show centre’s around the death of beloved hero cop turned movie star, “Chimp Cop”.  Easily moving between scenes, including a modern-day court setting, where Chimp Cop’s children have their lawyers battle it out over their inheritance to flashbacks of Chimp Cop’s life, a fantastic action filled story is woven.  At times the show felt like a sensational combination of the 60s Batman and Get Smart tv series and was a gag-a-minute roller coaster ride with a plot twist that Hollywood would be proud of.

The room was packed, with friends, long time fans and now new fans, who were made to laugh til they snorted, with the Chimp Cop team and their tech hitting their marks with the ease of professionals.  Definitely get along to see The Death of Chimp Cop but grab your tickets quickly as their shows are selling out!

MICF Review: Annie Louey “Butt Donut”

Sometimes life does a 360 degree turn around and throw the most unexpected surprise at us. That is exactly what happened to Annie Louey; but not in a graceful way. You might wonder why “Butt Donut” is the name of the comedy show. Don’t worry, Annie will explain exactly how she got the name “Butt Donut” during the show.

Annie Louey, a burnt survivor comedian who took us on a journey of her life experiences. Travelling, family, being a Chinese born Australian… and of course, the survival story of her incident. She was engaging with the audiences, expressive and very detailed (in a comical way).

Annie knows how to interact with you, and keep you on your toes during her show. You might learn a little about Americans and travelling around the world. A show that has bittersweet moments that may make your nose tingle. (That feeling you get when you are about to cry?). But Annie will use her humour to make sure you walk out laughing.

P.S
Did you know if you type in Annie Louey on your iPhone, it automatically corrects it to “Annie Lousy”? She is constantly being reminded by her phone how terrible she is, but her comedy show is the total opposite of the hidden “Annie Lousy”.

It will be a smart idea to end your night watching Annie perform in a cozy room at Pilgrim Bar, right beside the Yarra River. I mean, who doesn’t want to go home with a smile on their face and thinking …What are those tracks? (Find out at “Butt Donut”!)
