Midsumma Review: Love, Rorem

Reviewed by: Kerstyn Dance I’ll admit that before going into this performance, I had no idea who Ned Rorem was and why he was so special that someone would so carefully curate such a dedication to him through song. However, by the (somewhat sad) closing tune I was suddenly a new fan, vowing to send myself down some kind of Wikipedia wormhole when I got home. What a guy!! The kind of artistic intellectual you’ve love to use as your answer to the age-old ‘who would you most want as a dinner guest, alive or dead?’ Not knowing what to expect, it transpired that the 45 Downstairs venue was a perfect choice as I walked into the softly-lit pink hues of the intimate setting, the sounds of a piano playing gently, a pile of Ned Rorem’s works artfully stacked beside a piano. Pop Up Beach Club lands in Port Melbourne

The Classics are back across Stonnington

Music lovers will enjoy a series of free outdoor performances from some of Australia’s most accomplished artists when The Classics concert series returns to Stonnington’s parks and gardens this summer. Performers at The Classics include Archie Roach, The Jack Earle Big Band and Rhonda Burchmore, with the concerts set to cover the genres of Opera (1 February), Broadway (15 February) and Symphony (22 February). On Saturday 1 February 2020, Opera Australia and Anthony Pratt present Opera for the People, a free performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Hosting the evening will be the inimitable Dame Edna. “I’ve never graced Melbourne’s historic Music Bowl so hosting this Opera for the People is a first and it’ll be the operatic experience of a lifetime”. Edna will be joined on stage by some of Australia’s best singers, including local Melbournian Baritone Simon Meadows and Mezzo Soprano Angela Hogan. They will all perform alongside Orchestra Victoria under the baton of Brian Castles-Onion.
