A new Fitzroy, food & cocktail pairing

Long-time Fitzroy cocktail institution Polly recently formed a one-of-a-kind collaboration with ‘anti-restaurant’ project, Chee-Boh, the creative culinary side-project brought to life by Executive Chef Matthew Tine, and the results so far have been pretty magical. Polly Manager, Dave Whitehead is pretty excited about the collab, ‘we’re pretty excited to be working side by side with an experienced restaurant team, the combination of an established cocktail bar and a restaurant is actually quite rare and we feel that this really could be a niche that the people in Melbourne are looking for.’ He went on to say, ‘there are quite a few venues already that play in the space of food and cocktail pairings, but the bar is normally created to complement the restaurant offering, in this instance, the Polly / Chee-Boh concept is really more like two strangers, coming together with great ideas.’ Chee-Boh (Cibo – Italian word for food), has already hit the ground running with a fresh, balanced and affordable menu, which was designed to perfectly complement the impressive cocktail menu, and premium …

No Ifs, just Putts – Melbourne’s new indoor mini golf is teeing off

There is a graph somewhere in the universe that places all people in Melbourne on a spectrum. At one end of the spectrum is people who love the city for a lazy lunch, cheeky drink or just generally doing very little while consuming delicious calories to their hearts content. At the other end is the people who love to move and explore. Probably wearing sensible shoes with arch support, these people adore bubble soccer, know to the block the nearest rock climbing centre, and always book a hotel with a gym. If, like me, you sit somewhere in the middle, Melbourne has blessed us with the perfect spot to have a cocktail in one hand, and some kind of sporting accessory in the other – enter Holey Moley Mini Golf Bar. After gleefully donning your visor, enter a clash of pop culture and twee knick knacks and enjoy 27 themed courses, such as Game of Thrones and The Simpsons, while replacing your hard earned calorie deficit (Golf is a sport, right?) on cocktails like Happy Gilmoreo (Chambord …

MICF Review: Nikki Britton is Romanticide

We recently head along to check out super face-paced, anti-romance comedy – Nikki Britton is Romanticide as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. From the moment we arrived, we were hit with hilarious, laugh out loud comedy from a lady that says everything we are all thinking as she shares her own true stories about dating, single life, getting older and the mysteries behind life. Every single girl within the room caught themselves out nodding along as her continuous comment “This doesn’t happen to normal people” reminds them of their your own cringe-worthy stories. Being that they are all her own true stories, it does get emotional at times as she describes a heart-break and unbroken hope for true love but always lifts the crowds moods quickly in her hysterical fashion even if that does involve acting out seeing her ex and then falling into a tower of Tim-tams, which quickly melted under her. Nikki tied her performance together with a continuous reference to the two characters that she is in life – a …

MICF Review: Just Like Buddah

Last week we were invited along to check out Anthony Jeannot’s 2017 Melbourne International Comedy festival show – Just Like Buddah. In a way there were elements taken from last year’s show – Rage Against the Manchild, signature elements which sort of set Anthony apart from his fellow performers like his entrance.. he doesn’t really have one, this year, just popping up randomly from the back row to introduce himself. There also was plenty of his usual self deprecating, sweet style of humour, but this year the delivery was injected with a lot more confidence, so the show was sharper, more on point. Some of the jokes from last year were reworked into the new show, but the fresh material in Just Like Buddha takes the audience though trips to Sweden (and other types of trips), Anthony’s date with a Doomsday prepper, and the perils of trying to meditate with an over excited, anxious mind. All the kind of interesting, engaging tales that seem far out, but are relatable enough that the audience always has …

MICF Review: Sink Full of Forks

The first show we were invited to attend as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival was Jacqueline Mifsud’s – ‘Sink Full of Forks.’ Jacqueline is an already established performer, a co-host of the CH31 news satire program ‘The Leak’ and also works with Fox Sports as a warm up comedian, she’s someone who’s taken time to hone her craft and we, the audience get to enjoy the fruits of her labour. Sink Full of Forks (and yes, this phrase DOES get a well-linked reference in the material presented) is Jacqueline’s second MICF show and includes tales of her time in France rock-starring as an unpaid tour guide surviving on tips alone, references to meaningful conversations with staplers, heartbreaking woes of going through a break up as well some serious home truths for the intelligent, independent woman. Jacqueline is is charming and funny, and not just haha funny. We literally had tears running down our cheeks from laughter, even pausing after one particularly awesome punch line to have a ‘Pete-and-Manu-like knowing glance’ between us. This …
