Hash Specialty Coffee & Roasters

New to Melbourne, Hash Speciality Coffee & Roasters is the epitome of Melbourne hipsterdom. From the logo (yes, it’s a hashtag), through to their range of filter and cold brew coffees, this cafe, is one you’ll take your out of towner friends to, that will make them question why they aren’t living in Melbourne already. While we chose to dine there for breakfast, one cooler Sunday morning we must admit that the main drawcard for us was the speciality hot chocolate – We even passed up coffee to drink it. You’ve probably seen the photos already, the one that makes you look twice and wonder how it even works. (To be honest, we thought the same thing). Served on a wooden board, their signature “Hash Hot Chocolate”, is made with Mork Dark Chocolate (80% cocoa)  and served with fairy floss to sweeten the bitterness. Pour the hot chocolate over the fairy floss over and watch it dissolve like magic. For $6 it’s a chocolate mouthgasm! Visit the Hash Specialty Facebook page here.

17 Minute Tram Stories

Did you know the average length of a tram ride in Melbourne is 17 minutes? Well, the folks at Yarra Trams knew this fact and decided to do something about it in conjunction with the Melbourne Writers Festival. The result is 17 minute Tram Stories, a series of new writing pieces, from writers that will be attending the Melbourne Writers Festival, which each take about 17 minutes to read. There’s a new story every week from July 24th to August 30th. The first week’s story by Michaela Maguire concerned the nature of time and our perceived lack of it in today’s modern society. It even referenced one of We Know Melbourne’s favourite science experiments; the 1927 “Pitch Test” by Professor Thomas Parnell. Professor Parnell spent nearly 50 years waiting to observe the falling of one of the elusive droplets from a beaker of pitch. The drops only fell about once every 15 years and somehow, despite his vigilance, Professor Parnell managed to miss the falling of every drop during his life. The experiment is still ongoing …

The Right to Know

The Red Cross has been helping people for so long now that sometimes it is easy to take them for granted. That’s why it’s timely that there’s a new exhibition at the Immigration Museum celebrating 100 years of the Red Cross International Tracing Service. The service helps re unite families separated by wars, conflicts and natural disasters. Megan Goodman, the Program Directors says that the service has heard “heartbreaking stories of people who have fled war and conflict, of children forced from their parents at gunpoint and of husbands disappearing on their way to work. Using Red Cross’ network in 189 countries we can get messages to places where formal postal services don’t operate, where telephones don’t work and where others cannot go.” The fascinating stories of some of the families that the service has helped are on display at The Right to Know. 100 Years of the Red Cross Tracing Service Reuniting Families at the Immigration Museum When: 1st July until 25th October. Delhi Streets

Delhi Streets

Colourful, vibrant and aromatic. That’s three words we would use to describe India and that’s exactly what Delhi Streets bring to the table. Their modern, colourful space tucked away in Katherine Place is full of India pop memorabilia, including everything from Bollywood posters to Indian branded furniture and table settings. Although the actual space is small (seats 28 people), the atmosphere is constantly buzzing. Grab a seat at the bar and watch your meal being cooked in the kitchen! The menu is full of a range of vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes traditional dishes like biryanis, pakoras and puris, all at a very reasonable price. We opted for the thalis, and although when they first brought it out, we thought we were going to have order more, we can assure you, the dishes are just the right amount of food. Flavoursome, cheap and just right. We Know Melbourne tip: We’ve got to warn you, we’ve tried to go a couple of times for lunch only to be met by long lines at the door. We …
