Sweet, Savoury, Special: September Edition

If you’re a Melbourne local, you know Winter is like a relative who overstays their welcome. You want to kick them out, but you know the minute things get tough (read: Our simmering summers) you’ll be begging them to come back. So while we wait for Auntie Winter to pack up her mothball suits of grey clouds and sudden sideways rain, let’s celebrate all the great things about Spring via this month’s edition of Sweet, Savoury, Special: Fresh flavour, shared experiences, and being a little more conscious of that waist line in preparation for summer. Sweet: Serotonin Eatery, Burnley Practically an institution in the #cleaneating tribes of Melbourne, Serotonin eatery is a trendy little space tucked away in Richmond’s sister suburb of Burnley. Only adding to their philosophy of “food that promotes serotonin (The chemical released when we feel happy)”, you’ll find this cafe next to the Golden Square Bicentennial Park, making this a good spot for a vegetarian feast with the kids. Serotonin gets our sweet pick for September thanks to it’s Positive Pancakes …

After Hours with Eau De Vie

We chatted to Greg Sanderson, owner of one our favourite speakeasy bars, Eau de Vie for the inside scoop on the world of cocktails and the Melbourne bar scene.   You’ve been in the industry for several years now and have also won the 2012 Australian Bartender of the Year Award. In your opinion what makes a good bartender? A great bartender first and foremost must be a fantastic host. Receiving service from a professional bartender should feel like you have been invited into their home and you are being taken care of like a friend. Sure an in-depth knowledge of spirits, cocktails and everything they are serving is important but a truly great bartender will know exactly when to pull out those facts and not force them upon their guests. As well as being an impeccable host they must move with grace and purpose, entertain but know how to leave a conversation gracefully to keep working, must be clean and organised, and always be willing to learn new things.   Eau De Vie is one …

Be a Pasta Master

Where can you find a place to learn, eat and drink? At The Craft & Co workshop! We attended their pasta making class, and gosh did we love it. Don, the head chef of the restaurant teaches you step by step how to make the perfect pasta at home. This informative class also provides you a booklet which you can take home. On top of everything, the décor of the restaurant is rustic and earthy. The class is held just in front of a room where they brew beer. The class begins with Don explaining how to perfect your pasta from making the dough. He gives you time to ask as many questions as you desire. (Here is a small tip from Don if you are unsure how much flour you need for just two people – 300 grams will be plenty!) Don then shows you how to make different types of pasta – spaghetti, tortellini, ravioli and more. The best part of the class is that you get a hands-on session and actually make …

Interview: Ze’ev Meltzer of Once Bitter

Once Bitter is a story that begins years ago in boarding school. Ze’ev Meltzer showed a passion for beer but his school didn’t. So like a rebel without a cause, Ze’ev would sneak into the kitchen to work on secret beer experiments. Fast forward to years later, Ze’ev had fallen into the corporate world and was working in the finance sector, but he knew deep down it wasn’t for him. That’s why 3 years, he decided to chase his dreams again and quit his job to launch Collins Street Brewing Company and his flagship beer Once Bitter. We caught up with Ze’ev to talk about his beer and the inspiration behind it.
