What you’re doing this weekend: Touring ALL the Melbourne Markets

Sometimes the stars align, sometimes the weather is right, and sometimes it’s just a big ole’ coincidence. If you’re in the market (all puns intended) for a second hand bargain, an environmentally conscious buy, locally crafted artisanal goods or just some really really great food, this weekend is the time to strike. Choose from the well-known-and-regular, the new kids on the block, or an exclusive seasonal happening: They’re all good!

Camberwell Sunday Market

The well heeled market goer will know the Camberwell market is an OG for secondhand clothing, unique “antiques” and a variety of gorgeous handmade skincare from local sellers. Pick yourself up a second hand jacket, a designer tote, a succulent and a hand lotion, then find yourself one of leafy Camberwell’s cafes to gloat over your bargains

When: Every Sunday from 6:30am
Where: Market Place, Camberwell

Hank Marvin Market

If your dollar drop for food over fashion, Hank Marvin is for you. Enjoy over 40 street food vendors ready to feed the “Hank Marvin” amongst you (Hank Marvin is not a man, but a Brit Cockney slang for “starving” – Yeah we’re confused too) and offer something to bring home with a variety of local traders and fresh produce amongst the culinary delights.

When: Every Saturday
Where: 204 Dandenong Road, St Kilda East

The Rose Street Market

Another weekend constant, the Rose Street market is the North’s creative culture at best. Buy art direct from emerging artists, rifle through one of a kind books, fashion and homewares, and feel distinctly Fitzroy-esque with your haul of bespoke trinkets, art and homewares. The only terrarium I’ve ever had survive came from the Rose Street markets so if that’s not a sign, what is?

When: Every Saturday and Sunday from 11am
Where: 60 Rose Street, Fitzroy

Collingwood Artists Market

A fledgling market in comparison to others, Collingwood Artist’s Market kicked off a mere month ago, allowing locals of the area to experience their community’s best and brightest without having to even cross Victoria Parade. We’re a big fan of this markets genuinely rustic vibe, which features brands distinctly aimed at Zero Waste, reusable and repurposed items, thrown in amongst the usual gorgeous art, homewares and jewellery one always delights in while strolling around.

When: July 16th from 10am
Where: 51 Langridge Street, Collingwood

We tried Floatation Therapy and here is why we recommend it

It is hard to get away from the noise in a busy, yet vibrant city like Melbourne. Luckily Melbourne never says no to new and cool innovations. Floatation therapy, the new remedy treatment in town, will remind you that you need to have some me-time in this eventful city.

We got a chance to try out what floatation therapy is all about at Rest House Float Centre, located at Hampton East, and we absolutely enjoyed every second of it.

Why Floatation Therapy?
This relaxing activity will clearly help you reduce stress and anxiety. Not only that, it also can help improve blood circulation, digestion, skin health, accelerate muscle repair, improve sleep patterns, and much more.

Our experience at Rest House Float Centre.
For this special occasion, we have asked our graphic designer – Ting to attend this sensational experience. Rest House Float Centre mentioned to us that floatation therapy helps with creativity, to help those creatives out there to think outside of the box.

Ting described her experience as phenomenal! As a graphic designer, she felt she finally had some time to relax and actually let her creative brain cells be extra active. As Ting has a busy lifestyle herself, she felt the floatation therapy reminded her how important it is to have some down time in order to let all your worries and stress go, and let the creative mentality kick in.

“At first I wasn’t very comfortable with the idea of stripping down to nothing in order to have the full floatation experience. I then realized how great it actually felt to have nothing holding me back.”

Ting also mentioned how the staff was very informative and how incredibility amazing the place smelt. She adored the Rest House smell. As soon as she walked in the place, she could instantly smell the pureness, leafy greens, and it took her for a nature walk within 30 seconds of entering.

“It was an interesting feeling when I got into the pod. It felt a bit slimy, due to the high content of salt, I could just feel there was a layer or something. My body adapted to it fairly quickly, and for the first five minutes, I was trying to discover what my body can do while floating. As I am quite short, (to put in perspective, I could fit three of me in the tank.) I was floating around from one end to the other. I was like a little kid, playing in a pool.”

The floating pod has a button which you can switch the lights off, on the inside. You also have an option of having the music on the whole session of your float, or just in the beginning and end. (Note, you need to let the staff know before you start, as they control the music from the outside.) There is also a floating neck rest, for those who need some more support.

“I had my lights switched off after my five minutes of fun. I decided to give the neck rest a try, and it was surprisingly comfortable. I let my mind go, let all my stress, all my worries… let everything go and just like that… my whole body was relaxed, my mind was blank and I went into a deep sleep within the first minute. I then suddenly woke up before the music kicked off, and as soon as I opened my eyes, I felt ready to embrace the rest of my day.”

Ting told us how she had to go to a charity event that night, and the event didn’t end till 11pm. Normally she is extremely tired by 10:30pm, but not that night. She was still upbeat and held amazing conversations with event attenders.

“I would definitely recommend this, especially for the busy creative people here in Melbourne. There is so much going on in this city, and we get so distracted. Sometimes we get lost on how to keep our creative minds working properly. Eventually, you will start imagining or perhaps dreaming while you are in the tank, floating away. That is when your creative self starts kicking in.”

After your floatation therapy – some helpful tips which are put together by Rest House Float Centre.

  • Drink a large glass (500ml+) of warm lemon water first thing in the morning.
  • Eat more greens!
  • Take a cold shower!

Rest House Floatation Therapy Tips

Rest House has put together a few helpful tips which you can implement into your daily routine to compliment the steps you’ve already taken towards a better you!

  • Drink a large glass (500ml+) of warm lemon water first thing in the morning (half to whole lemon squeezed). This will hydrate the body, help reduce joint pain, improve digestion, increase liver function, revitalise skin, the list goes on. There are far too many benefits to list them all here but given that more than 70% of our body is made up of water, it truly is an essential element often neglected by many, so drink up!
  • Eat more greens! The human body requires minerals such as Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium amongst many others in order to function at its optimum. Magnesium alone is responsible for over 300 physiological processes within the body yet a vast majority of people are deficient not only in Magnesium but many other minerals due to our diet and lifestyle. Green vegetables are full of minerals and will help replenish your body’s levels, leaving you with more energy and feeling and looking great!
  • Take a cold shower! Although this may sound insane to most, there are some amazing benefits of taking a cold shower. It will assist with stress reduction, improve your skin and hair, increase alertness, boost testosterone, stimulate weight loss, and improve circulation and immunity just to mention a few. You may want to work your way toward a colder shower by gradually reducing the temperature each day. Within a week you should be able to have only the cold water running and from there on it will become easier and easier and ultimately become a habit which will provide you with great benefits!

WKM Review: Fully Made Up

We were recently invited to the fabulous Butterfly Club to check out opening night of Fully Made Up – An Improvised Cabaret, starring multi-award winning comedian Jenny Wynter.

Combining cabaret, comedy and improv, this performance brings to life a veteran cabaret starlet, who’s entertaining evening soiree is entirely comprised of stories, songs, memories and monologues – inspired (in true improv style) by the suggestions of the audience.

Improv alone is hard enough, but throw in the added challenge of creating an on-the-spot, rhyming, reasonably relevant show tune to random suggestions like ‘squid’, ‘grapes’ and ‘eat the frog’ and you’ve got yourself a pretty darn entertaining premise.

Slipping just once, with real class and a super quick redirection, Jenny absolutely nails her latest show in a satin draped display of raw, fabulous singing, silly monologues and general awesomeness.

We would have loved a few more songs and less monologue in the first half of the show, as this woman sure can sing, but overall we loved the show, and laughed the whole way through.

An enviously quick mind, amazing, raw voice, fabulous humour and warm, wonderful talent – get along and check this show out before it wraps up on Sunday.

Check out some of Jenny’s earlier work here.
