Interview: Dream Lover – Hannah Fredericksen

Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical is a big show with a big score and a big heart. The show includes 34 great hits from the 50s and 60s including Mack The Knife, Beyond the Sea, Splish Splash and the multi-million-seller Dream Lover.

We had a chance to have a chat with Hannah Fredericksen, starring as Sandra Dee, to find out more about herself and the show.

Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into performing?
In primary school my Principal gave my Mum a book called ‘Raising Your Spirited Child – A guide for parents whose child is MORE intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent and energetic’. Poor Mum. I think it was clear to my parents very early on that I wouldn’t take a predictable path! I discovered music and theatre throughout school and it was where I found myself and truly thrived. Music came first; piano, guitar, saxophone and singing lessons and theatre followed soon after. I don’t remember the moment when I realised that it was something people could do for a living or when I decided it was what I wanted to do with my career but I have always had an innate and overwhelming love for storytelling and entertaining. When I finished high school I had my heart set on studying Music Theatre and I was lucky enough that the Victorian College of the Arts: Bachelor of Music Theatre had a place for a 17 year old from Brisbane. The rest is history!

Tell us what were some of the toughest moments as an actress?
‘Dreamlover’ covers all of Bobby Darin’s 37 years in two and a half hours. To ride the highs and lows of both his and Sandra Dee’s lives (and there were many!) on stage every night is quite emotionally challenging. It was also my first time playing a real life person rather than a fictional character and I felt a lot of (self-inflicted!) pressure to do justice to Sandra Dee’s legacy. It was a huge relief to have their son Dodd Darin’s approval and support after he attended our opening night performance in Sydney!

What was the highlight performing Dreamlover – The Musical?
To go on stage every night and tell a story I love, sing music I adore with an 18 piece big band and share the stage with people I cherish and respect. As a performer, it truly doesn’t get much better than that!

Your next adventure after DreamLover would be?
There are some exciting whispers but nothing I can confirm as yet! However,  I am about to become an Aunt three times over with my brother’s baby being born by Christmas and my sister having twins early next year so I imagine my babysitting duties will keep me very happily busy between gigs!

Now that we are heading into summer in Melbourne what would a best summers day look like with you in Melbourne?
We’ll begin with brunch. Brunch is a religion in Melbourne. I’ll take you to ‘St Ali’ in South Melbourne and then we can have a wander around the South Melbourne Markets, we can catch a movie at the outdoor cinema at The Abbotsford Convent and visit ‘Lentil As Anything’ for lunch, Pimms on the rooftop at ‘Madame Brussels’ in the late afternoon followed by dinner and dessert at ‘The Night Noodle Markets’. You’ll be very full and very sunburnt by the end!

If you could choose a different career path what would it be and why?
The first thing that jumped to mind when I read this question was ‘Shetland Ponies’. But I realise that isn’t quite a career path. So if I had to choose, I think I would be an interior designer. It’s creative and ever-changing and it would help me to justify my wildly unhealthy addiction to homewares magazines and realestate.com. Whenever I am touring it is always super important to me that I make my space feel like home and I think I’d really enjoy helping other people to do the same. But if all else fails, Shetland Ponies.

What are the five things you cannot live without?
Laughter, adventure, honesty, love and family. (And Whittakers Milk Chocolate).

Lastly, describe yourself in 5 words?
I have to come clean and say that I found this ridiculously hard so I cheated and put this to a family vote. Here are their five choices: vivacious, tenacious, funny, loyal and empathetic. Thanks Fredericksen’s!

Where to hike this Summer

With the weather warming up and the holidays approaching, we are planning bushwalking and hiking in Victoria’s best hotspots. If you wish to escape the city hustle and bustle below is a list of the best hiking places right on our doorstep, just waiting to be explored.

EASY
The Domino Trail – Trentham to Lyonville – Return (Near Trentham, Victoria)
Length: 12km
Duration: 4hours
Location: Western Victoria
Distance from Melbourne CBD: 85km (85km north west of Melbourne)

Trentham to Lyonville hike is an easy and enjoyable walk running along the old railway line with the exception of a short detour around the bridge over Coliban River (about 600 metres from Lyonville).

The walk is approximately 6km long and will take about 2 hours to complete one way. After a few minutes walking, you will discover the first old wooden bridge built in the late 1870’s which crosses Stoney Creek. A few metres after the bridge, on your left, you will see the old Sunnyside foundry built in 1893 to produce the famous Trehella car jack.

This is an amazing walk and sign boards along the rail explain the history of the area.

The Pinnacle – Wonderland track – The Grampians – Return (Near Halls Gap, Victoria)
Length: 4 km
Duration: 2.5 hours
Location: Grampians National Park
Distance from Melbourne CBD: 256km

The Pinnacle – Wonderland Track in the Grampians is the most amazing 4 km hike. The walk will make you travel via the impressive Grand Canyon and wonderful rock formations of Silent Street to the breath-taking views from the Pinnacle.

Although this is a short and easy hike, it is recommended for fit walkers, as the track involves rock steps, several seasonal water crossings and some rock hopping.

MODERATE
Ferny Creek Anzac Memorial Loop – One way (Near Sherbrook, Victoria)
Length: 6 km
Duration 1.50 hours

The Dandenongs is rich with hiking spots.  An excellent one is the Anzac Memorial to Sherbrooke Falls via Break Point track.

Full of surprises along the way, you can choose to shorten or lengthen the hike as with almost every trail in the hills, other tracks intersect.

Wonderland Loop – Grampians National Park – Halls Gap – Return (Near Halls Gap, Victoria)
Length: 11 km
Duration: 5 hours
Location: Grampians National Park

Distance from state capital: 253 km

Enjoy a popular half day walk in the Grampians which starts and end at Halls Gap. Well known for its scenic views as well as its proximity to numerous attractions located within the park, the walk is the best option for visitors looking for a one day trip.

Please note that although categorised as medium, there are some sections where the walk is hard. If you are a novice and want to experience a challenge, this walk will be the perfect one to start exploring your strength.

DIFFICULT
Grampians Peaks Trail | Halls Gap | Pinnacle | Bugiga Hiker Camp | Mount Rosea | Borough Huts
Length: 36 km
Duration: (3 days/2 nights)

Location: Grampians National Park
Distance from Melbourne CBD: 253km

The best way to enjoy with this hike is to start from Halls Gap, travel through section one of the Grampians Peaks Trail and conclude at Borough Huts. You can park your car at Borough Huts, as the walk is going to end at this spot.  Once at Borough Hut, organise a Halls gap tourism shuttle bus run by Roy Clapp to pick you up and take you to the starting point for the walk. You first stop will be Venus Baths, continue walking to the Pinnacles, as there is not much to see at Venus Baths. You will discover some great stops on the way such as Grand Canyon, Cool Chamber and Silent Street. The last section leading to the Pinnacle is a difficult hike, so better to go slowly to be able to make it to the top.

Your itinerary should be:
Day 1: Halls Gap to Bugiga Hiker Camp via Pinnacle
Day 2: Bugiga Hiker Camp > Mount Rosea > Borough Huts

Once at the Pinnacle you will discover an amazing view and will be able to take a 360 video. This is a formidable hike with some great views and a memorable walk in the Grampians.

Wilsons Promontory – Refuge Cove
Length: 34 km
Duration 2-3 days
Location: Wilsons Promontory National Park
Distance from Melbourne CBD: 225km

Wilsons Promontory to Refuge Cove is a 34km return hike located in the Wilsons Promontory National Park. The hike which should take you between 2-3 days to complete will lead you to stunning, secluded beach situated on the eastern side of the Prom, accessible via a walking track from Sealers Cove to the North or Little Waterloo Bay to the South. Follow the track between Sealers Cove and Refuge Cove to discover fantastic great views, surrounded by lush vegetation.

Take a ride on Tram 96

Melbourne loves a good tram route and one of our favourites is Tram 96. it is one of Melbourne’s busiest tram routes and will take you to many of Melbourne’s popular tourist attractions such as St Kilda Beach, South Melbourne Market and into suburban Brunswick East.

Whether you travel north to Brunswick East or south to St Kilda, we’ll guide you to the local cafes, mainstream shops and the must see spots while on route. So grab your Myki card and get onboard.

Head North to Brunswick East.
Grab your morning coffee and something to eat at Self Preservation a creative and inviting space that sells more than just coffee, just a short walk from tram stop 9. It is one vibrant yet relaxing place where you get to enjoy one of Melbourne’s best coffees, fresh seasonal dishes while you take in the showcases of local jewellers and artists.

After a satisfying breakfast, jump on the tram towards Brunswick East and hop off at stop 12. Here you will find Melbourne Museum with something suitable for all ages. With free entry into the main halls you will be wowed by interactive technology whilst getting a history lesson. Before leaving, take a stroll through the calm and refreshing living rainforest.

Hop back on the tram to stop 16 and head to Scopri for lunch. Scopri means ‘to discover’ in Italian and you will be happy to discover this local gem. The service, food and atmosphere will transport you to Italy, if only for an hour.

Back on the tram to stop 18 or take the short walk to Alice’s Bookshop. With 18,000 books spread across four rooms, you are sure to find a rare, secondhand treat.

Nearby you will also find North Carlton Ceramics, owned by Melbourne based ceramicist Valerie Restarick. She exhibits and sells her work at the studio, as well as teaching pottery for those wanting to get creative behind the wheel.

Worked up a thirst? End your day at the Temple Brewing Company. Hop on the tram and get off at stop 23. Just a short walk from the tram stop, Temple Brewing Company has a great selection of beers best accompanied with fantastic chicken wings and battered broccoli.

Head South to St Kilda Beach.
Get a hand-made French pastries at Agathe Patisseries Petite, a short walk from tram stop 5 – Bourke Street Mall. Start off your day at the hole in the wall in the Royal Arcade. It is never too early for chocolate croissants.

Jump on the tram and head to stop 1.  Here you can do your morning cardio at the Spencer Outlet Centre and grab a bargain at any of the 100 shops onsite at the same time.

Prefer to stay outdoors, skip the shops and head to stop 124a instead.  Here you will find the Southbank/South Wharf area of Melbourne which includes Crown Casino and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.  Our recommendation is to enjoy the summer breeze along Orrs Walk and watch the boats go by on the Yarra River, grab a bench and enjoy the view.

Time for lunch, jump back on the tram and head to stop 127 and South Melbourne Market. There are plenty of food stalls around to enjoy including fresh oysters and peeled prawns or try one of our favourites – paella from Simply Spanish or Hongos quesadillas from Paco Y Lola.

Ready for a cool down swim? A couple of stops away (stop 129) is the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre where you can enjoy an afternoon dip. With state of the art facilities, 5 pools onsite including a wave pool and waterslide, this is a truly impressive stadium that was home to the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Jump back on the tram and finish your day in St Kilda.  Stop 136 for The Esplanade and an afternoon stroll on the beach.  Keep on walking along the coastline, you’ll see Luna Park right in front of you. We dare you to ride the world’s oldest roller-coaster, keep your eyes open and you will also get to see the most stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.

After your fun at Luna Park, head onto Acland Street which is packed with delicious cafes, restaurants and shops. One of our favourite shops is Urban Attitude, where unique and quirky gifts hide. For dinner, try Sister of Soul, a vegetarian haven that will tempt even the meat lovers out there.

No trip to St Kilda is complete without a cake from one of the many iconic cake shops along Acland Street. Stare into the windows before making your choice, it has been a long day, go on have two.

Interview: Candy Ng – Melbourne Illustrator

Candy Ng, a well-known Melbourne based illustrator did our Facebook featured cover. She has published books and done public talks, and continue to influence local artists with her ever-growing creativity. Let’s get to know Candy a little.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you’ve got to where you are today, Candy?
I grew up in Hong Kong and moved to Melbourne to study Graphic Design; I fell in love with everything Melbourne has to offer (food culture, creative scene and nature) and decided to make Melbourne my second home. I worked as a Graphic Designer for four years before becoming a full time Illustrator. You may say self-discipline and persistence helped me to reach to where I am today. In creative practises, I create and often make mistakes, but failure is a better opportunity for me to get closer to where I want to be. I learned to leave my ego at the door and ask people with expertise for constructive feedback/advice. There were times I felt like I am “not good enough” but now I accepted “each to their own” and no one “will ever be good enough”, so it was great to finally let go and feel free.

As a young artist, who has published books and did public speaking, what advice would you give to Y-Gens?
I love the buzz in Melbourne when Winter disappears and Spring is in the air! My inspiration for this issue came from the racing and fashion events that take over the city and seamlessly give it a new life. I feel it becomes such a huge part of our culture; like the city and it’s people are one. Even if you’ve never been to one of those events, you claim it as your own. It’s as much a part of the city as the people in it, and that’s what I tried to incorporate into my art.

What was your main inspiration for the cover?
Places I would go/do in summer.

Tell us where is your favourite place to be in the vibrant Summer Melbourne.
I have a few… my favourites would be: number 1, watch Men’s final of Aus Open at Fed Square, number 2 go to Sidney Myer Free Concerts and lastly watch a movie at the rooftop cinema/Moonlight cinema, all in picnic style.

Lastly, how can our readers get to know you even more and where can we purchase your work?

Interview: Chris Cincotta

We had a privilege to get to know the talented photographer, known as King of the streets – Chris Cincotta. He is the founder and creator behind @Melbourneiloveyou on Instagram and Humans in Melbourne on Facebook.

Let Chris tell you a little more about himself…

Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?
I’m a Melbourne based photographer and I run the ‘Humans in Melbourne’ Facebook page as well as the ‘@Melbourneiloveyou’ instagram page. I take walking tours on the weekends and I have a photography store on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets where I sell my photos from the city.

Where does your inspiration come from?
I love Melbourne and I want everyone to see Melbourne the way I do. The city itself is such a fantastic place to be with so much always happening and I just want to show off as much of that as I can.

You also do Melbourne walking tours, what can people expect?
I love taking the tours! I think my passion comes across when I speak on the tours. We start at Flinders Street Station and then go for a wonder though some of Melbourne’s little laneways and we hit some of the hidden gems as well. I shout everyone a coffee to start our day to put everyone in a Melbourne state of mind. Everyone also walks away with a $60 print and there are a few little surprises during the tour.

Where’s is your favourite place to take people on the tour and why?
Some of the hidden laneways. When people see some of the amazing artwork that’s away from the usual tourist traps and their faces light up, that’s what I love about being a tour guide.

If someone only has 6 hours in the city, what would you suggest they do?
Just get lost. Wander with a coffee in hand and find the little places where no one is because you’re bound to find something fantastic.

Summer is here, what’s your favourite thing to do in the city?
Go to Pony Fish Island on the Yarra, get a drink and watch the sun go down over the water.

What’s the one thing (besides your walking tour) that people must do when here in Melbourne?
Sit for a couple of hours down Centre Place with a coffee and just people watch. If you want to know what Melbourne is, that’s where you go to discover it.

Hosier lane is a hotspot for graffiti, where else can people view some amazing works of art?
Everyone should go to Presgrave Place, Croft Alley, Strachan Lane and so many more little lanes to see street art that will blow your mind!

Which suburb would you recommend for a day in the sunshine and why? Williamstown. It is such a great little town and if you couldn’t see the city skyline you’d have no idea you were 20 minutes outside of Melbourne. It is a little village with such great views and beautiful little shops that allow you to feel like your hours down the coast.

Get a copy of Chris’s book here or visit him at the corner of Bourke and Swanston Street.

Review – Hash Specialty Coffee

Right next to Camberwell Market, you’ll find Hash Specialty Coffee where the amazing Hot Hash Chocolate is. This signature drink looks as impressive as it tastes. Let the rich dark chocolate hits you as you wake up your taste bugs. Our big tips for you would be to pour the hot chocolate slowly and ask for some warm milk on the side to add in.

The produces are all freshly bought from the Camberwell Market, even the flowers on the table are fresh from the florist next door. It is a great place for a catch up over the weekend, or for a quick scrumptious work lunch. The cafe is suitable for all weather conditions, sunny or rain; Hash Specially Coffee is right under the roof in the alleyway.

The cafe is famous for French Toasted Bacon Croissant because it is the perfect combination of sweet and salty. We also love their Sautéed mixed Asian Mushrooms. It is different from other cafes where they serve filed mushrooms. This dish is healthy, earthy and one of its kind. For our vegetarians friends, ask for no crisp pancetta for the mushroom dish; or maybe try their Grilled Banana and Ginger Loaf or Deep Friend Corn & Haloumi Fritters.

East side residence, no need to travel all the way to the city for an Instar-worthy photo this weekend. Visit Hash Specialty Coffee at Camberwell, where the staffs are welcoming, the food is mouth-watering and the friendly atmosphere.

When: 7 days a week, check here for their opening time.
Where: 564 Burke Rd, Camberwell, 3124 > look out for the Hash signage next to Boost.
