WINE MASTERCLASSES Hosted by Max Allen

11.00am: Buon Giorno! Guten Morgen! … The Wines of Alto Adige South Tyrol, or Alto Adige, on Italy’s northern border, was part of the Austrian Empire until 1919; and still displays a strong Germanic character. Vineyards are located on spectacular sites up to 1000m along the Isarco and Adige rivers, which flow from the Alps to meet just south of Bolzano. White wine accounts for 60% of production in the region; the main varietals being Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. In terms of red wine the most important native varietal is Lagrein; although the Alto Adige is also recognized for releasing Italy’s greatest Pinot Noirs. This masterclass will showcase the rich diversity of the region, and you’ll taste some of the best examples currently available.

1.00pm: Viva La Tuscany… Sangiovese vs French Varieties While French varieties have probably made their way into Italy for hundreds of years, the modern era can be traced to the decision by the Marchese Mario Incisa dell Rocchetta in the 1940’s to plant Cabernet Sauvignon at the Tenuta San Guido Estate on coastal Tuscany. The resulting wine ‘Sassicaia’, launched a revolution in Tuscan (and Italian) winemaking; leading to the planting of many other French varieties into the traditional Italian wine landscape. Today Tuscany is home to a broad range of French varieties, produced either as a single wine, or blended with Tuscany’s native son, Sangiovese.

3.00pm: Always the Bridesmaid, Never the Bride… Barbaresco Masterclass It is impossible to talk about Barbaresco without mentioning its more well-known neighbour, Barolo; which often causes Barbaresco to be unfairly relegated to a ‘bridesmaid’ role. Like Barolo, Barbaresco must be made from 100% Nebbiolo, and aged for a specific length of time before release. Traditionally regarded as the more ‘feminine’ style, today stylistic differences are less evident, due to greater winemaker influence. In this masterclass we’ll look at some of the sub-zone characteristics within the appellation, as well as icon producers, featuring Gaja, who virtually single-handedly brought the profile of Barbaresco to the wine world.

QV Virtual / Chill Program

QV Melbourne welcomes winter with Virtual / Chill: a winter village complete with a state-of-the-art new VR experience, build-your-own s’mores, fire pit, bespoke hot cocktails from Teeling Irish Whiskey, live music and more.

As cooler evenings descend over the city, the square at QV Melbourne will transform into a modern Nordic wonderland. Experience Scandinavian cabin comfort, warming food and drink, live music and the launch of a cinematic new virtual reality experience from Friday 18 May – Sunday 10 June. Best of all, the entire program is free, with complimentary food or drink every night.

Virtual / Chill will unveil an all-new completely immersive VR experience created by the multi award winning pioneers in 360˚ VR at Rapid Films. Using real footage filmed on GoPro’s newest flagship 360˚ video camera, the experience will see you soaring 2000 metres in the air past snow-capped mountains, dancing over treetops and through the valleys of the Swiss Alps.

“We are thrilled to be launching this new VR experience with QV Melbourne. Not only is this some of the first footage filmed on GoPro’s phenomenal new 360˚ camera, we have made the whole activation even more unique by turning it into a multi-sensory experience. Tactile or ‘touch’ elements will work to enhance the virtual reality in the real world,” says Rapid Film’s Executive Producer Susannah Phillips.

It is designed so the experiencer sits suspended in a paragliding harness, with cool air whisking past their face while they are immersed in Samsung’s Gear VR mobile headset.

“By replicating physical elements in the real world, the effect is really significant in creating a stronger sense of presence and immersion,” says Susannah.

At the launch on Friday 18 May, paragliders will be able to fuel up for their flight with a complimentary build-your-own S’mores Station. Pick and choose what you want ‘s’more of’, toast melting marshmallows on the open fire pit and sip steaming cocktails from the multi-award winning Teeling Whiskey, all while enjoying live music from rising star Tayla Thomas and dreamy singer-songwriter Emma Yarosh from 5pm – 10pm.

Live music will light up the following three Friday evenings from 4pm-7pm, with Emma Yarosh returning along with acoustic musician James Hall to welcome the weekends at QV Square. Performing by the light of the open fire, with marshmallows toasting, it’s the perfect nordic night out.

The sure-fire hit S’mores Station will be available from 4pm-7pm Friday 18 May – Sunday 20 May and Thursday 31 May – Sunday 3 June.

From Thursday 24 May – Sunday 27 May between 4pm-7pm, treat yourself to an après-ski with the Virtual / Chill Bar serving up custom made red grape, apple and spicy pear mulled wine, heated to the perfect temperature.

Warm yourself from the inside out at the Virtual / Chill Bar with complimentary hot cocktails by Teeling Whiskey from 4pm-7pm on Thursday 7 June – Sunday 10 June. Chase away the chills with Damn Fine Hot Whiskey, a blend of spices, rosemary, lemon and Teeling Small Batch Whiskey, their flagship expression matured in ex-rum barrels and bottled at 46% ABV with no chill filtration. Or if you prefer something sweeter, Teeling is reviving the Irish Coffee. Prepared with their signature Spiced Stout Syrup, orange zested cream and freshly grated nutmeg, it’s already a huge hit at NYC’s Dead Rabbit, crowned world’s best bar for two years running.

Worlds apart from other retail precincts in Melbourne, QV represents the quintessential Melbourne lifestyle. Intimate laneways in the urban precinct give visitors the freedom to wander and discover the eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants at their own pace. Located on the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston Streets, QV has something for everyone with boutiques, enlightening entertainment and cosmopolitan bars and restaurants.

NEW OPENINGS AT HIGHPOINT SHOPPING CENTRE

On Saturday 19 May 2018, Highpoint Shopping Centre will officially welcome three new exciting brands to its IN: TRANSIT precinct: an outdoor retail and casual dining hub formed by three shipping containers, taking inspiration from food truck parks and capitalising on the interest of pop-up stores and temporary retail spaces. Open to the public from mid-May, the new tenants of IN: TRANSIT will be The Jerk, offering authentic Jamaican street food, Legacy Barbers & Essential Pieces, a barber and personalised fashion duo and The Sneaker Laundry, Australia’s first sneaker maintenance operator.

To celebrate the brands’ arrival, IN: TRANSIT will host an exciting launch event for the entire family, featuring:
• 1,000 free hot jam donuts from the much-loved Dandee Donuts food truck, departing its home at Dandenong Market to serve its delicious dough in the West
• 100 free traditional jerk chicken meals and a complimentary side with any purchase at The Jerk
• Complimentary barber cuts with a spontaneous twist by Legacy Barbers & Essential Pieces – customers will need to spin the wheel to reveal the cut they will receive
• A pop-up beer bar with Highpoint gift cards and IN: TRANSIT vouchers to be won
• A street game inspired by traditional corn hole, also with Highpoint gift cards and retailer prize packs to be won
• Live music by a local musician duo

As the name suggests, the nature of IN: TRANSIT will see multiple retailers call the shipping containers home over the next five years – with an ongoing series of curated pop-up shops delivering an adaptable, trend-driven retail precinct for shoppers and residents. This approach will allow the precinct to showcase new and emerging brands alongside cult favourites, expanding Highpoint’s offering for customers.

“Highpoint Shopping Centre is thrilled to welcome The Jerk, Legacy Barbers & Essential Pieces and The Sneaker Laundry to IN: TRANSIT as an opportunity to introduce new brands to the West and continue developing the precinct to provide the most exciting retail experiences for shoppers,” says Highpoint Shopping Centre’s Centre Manager, Ryan Ling.

The Jerk will open its first bricks and mortar store at IN: TRANSIT, serving up a delicious menu of Jamaican jerk chicken and cassava chips, made from recipes passed down by generations, with spices imported directly from Jamaica. Also venturing into its first bricks and mortar space is Legacy Barbers & Essential Pieces, a combined retailer who celebrates personalised style through its contemporary barbershop and customisable apparel range, only available wholesale and through Ebay until now. Previously available only in Melbourne’s CBD, The Sneaker Laundry now delivers its quality sneaker care services to the West at IN: TRANSIT, from basic sneaker cleans to entire sneaker restorations.
