Salami Festa: Celebrate your love of the cured meat

Salami like your Nonna makes it!

Arguably one of Melbourne’s most unique and delicious food festivals, the Salami Festa returns to Melbourne this October for it’s fourth year. Celebrating the art and tradition of salami making, the best of the best Melbourne salami makers will be competing to have their prized homemade salami judged by leading salami aficionados and punters.

With the heat on for salami makers (last year a non-Italian took out the grand prize), we expect the standards this year to be notched up to the next level.  Festa patron Guy Grossi, will be leading the judging panel along with chefs Dom Marzano, Rosa Mitchell (Rosa’s Kitchen), Massimo Scalas (Salumi Australia) Pina Busa (Home Make It) and special guest nonna Rocchina Catoggio.

This Festa isn’t just for the Salami makers, but also for lovers of the delicious cured meat. There’ll be a pop-up salami shed hosting salami making demonstrations by Home Make It, a range of workshops, live music, two bocce courts, and stellar Italian food from Saluministi, Ladro and D.O.C – plus St Ali Coffee and Messina gelato – all in one giant salami filled weekend.

The salami festivities kick off on 16 October 2015 at Northcote Town Hall (let’s hope there’s that giant cheese wheel again like last year) and runs through until the big Festa Day, Sunday 18 October. For the first time, this year’s Salami Festa will also include a Festa Eve Market with stalls from D.O.C, Ombra Salumi Bar and Saluministi, coffee with St Ali and gelato from Messina. The night will also be rounded off with DJ’s and salami making/cooking demos.

We Know Melbourne are giving away 5 double passes to the Festa Eve Market. To enter, tell us in 25 words or less what’s the greatest piece of wisdom you’ve received from your Nonna (or Nonno).

Competition has now closed.

Fringe Festival Review: A Star is Bored

A Star is Bored was anything but boring. In fact, it had all the energy of a one-man mini Broadway show in loud flanno PJs with fabulous hair.

Kicking off with a hilarious showreel, where Nick parodies everything from Broadway and primetime crime to teen horror movies, we were taken on his journey from the ill-matched mean streets of Reservoir through an all-consuming Foxtel addiction, his never-give-up-efforts to make it big in reality television (including a super-funny Toddlers & Tiaras’ parody) to his final destination – when it all came together in a shower of glitter – set to Sesame Street.

Nick Eynaud’s vocal range was incredible – his catchy but well written songs adapted to the tune of popular hits from the last few decades, my personal favourite.. set to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights was perfectly timed and came out of left field for maximum effect.

I simply can’t recommend this show enough, especially if you are a fan of pop culture and musical theatre, ironic references to the desperation and depravity of soul-selling reality television and the narcissistic belief that, in the words of Andy Warhol – ‘in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.’

The level of audience interaction was also perfectly balanced for those who prefer to comfortably sit back and watch performances – we even walked away with a signed headshot. Thanks Nick, it’s going straight to the pool room.

A Star is Bored has completed it’s 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival run at the Butterfly Club.

Gravity Floatation Centre

Our Gravity Float Experience

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to exist in a world without gravity? Last week, we got to experience the true feeling of weightlessness with the latest relaxation trend – floatation therapy, at the Gravity Float Centre.

If you’re scratching your head, confused about exactly what is floatation therapy, then you’re in the same boat (no pun intended) as we were. Floatation therapy dates back to the 1950s when medical practitioner and neuropsychiatrist , John Lily wanted to test the effects of sensory deprivation. Since then floatation therapy has been used widely for stress, anxiety and muscle relaxation.

Gravity Float Centre is located in Northcote (right opposite Welcome to Thornbury), and their centre is focused on providing the ultimate relaxation therapy. Their range of  organic skincare products, herbal teas and zen waiting room are the perfect complement to your therapy.

After you have filled out the usual registration forms, you are led into your private Gravity Float room (there’s 6 of them in the centre) and a staff member runs you through what to expect.  We were told that the Gravity Pod is heated to body temperature, with 600kg of Epsom salts and just enough water so that you’ll always be floating a few inches from the bottom.

We must admit that  we were a little bit apprehensive at first – the idea of getting into a closed pod and lying in there for an hour sounded terrifying, especially when at the best of times we are usually a little bit claustrophobic and cannot sit still for longer than a minute. But we were there to relax so into the pod we went.

The experience started off with an initial 10 minutes of calming music that eased us into the experience, and there is a calming blue light that gives the pod a warm glow. It took us a while  to settle in with a bit of splashing around and readjusting of our neck pillow (definitely recommended for first timers). We also had to get used to the idea of not rubbing our eyes. We don’t recommend getting the salt water anywhere near your eyes as they will sting like never before – although there’s a saline spray in the pod if you’re anything like us and manage to splash some in.

After a good 15-20 minutes we found our relaxation position, and settled in for the remainder of the hour in complete silence and darkness. It is a strange sensation not being able to see, nor feel the weight of your body but it something to be experienced! Time just seemed to pass by and before we know it, the calming music had started up again telling us that our session was over.

We trialled the introduction pack -3 passes – as they say it takes 3 times to get used to the whole idea of floatation and relaxation and they were correct.  It does take a while to fully sink into that pure trance state. Although we enjoyed all three sessions, it was  on the third and final time, that we felt at one with the whole relaxation therapy. We weren’t even sure whether we fell asleep or not (which they say is the ultimate relaxation)! After that third session it was as if both our mind and body felt completely restored, and free of aches and pains with a desire to book in that next float session.

Where: 559 High St, Northcote VIC 3070 (soon to open in Armadale).

We Know Melbourne Tip: This relaxation therapy is for anyone and everyone, whether you are  injured by sports, stressed,  pregnant or just someone who needs a bit of R&R time. If at first, you don’t feel the benefits, go back a couple more times. It’s worth it!

Melbourne Fringe Festival

Fringe Festival Review: The Sparrow Men

The fun thing about improv is that you can go to the same show every night for a week, and quite literally never see the same thing twice. Having seen these two in action before at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, I was once again (as always) impressed by their quick wit, fast ability to throw themselves into character and to draw energy and direction from each other with the smallest of cues.

As with most performances of this genre, the audience are asked to throw out their best and brightest one-word ideas for the theme of the night’s show. In this instance we were visibly taken from the sumptuous, marble-roofed home of two fussy retirees, one nosily and jealously spying through the venetian-blinded windows on the new wealthy neighbours as they were moving in, over to the neighbours themselves, past two would-be assassins Russian with a penchant for ham (by the gram) – and then right back around to the beginning, each set of characters somehow linked to one-another as part of the story – it all becoming clear at the end in a loud ‘A-HA’ moment.

Marcus and Andy have great energy, a clear, swinging dynamic and a fabulous knack for making their audience laugh. They also have a neat offer of free return tickets, so if you like what you see on the night and feel like heading back for a repeat performance you can do so on the house.
