A Langham Afternoon Tea with Wedgwood

The Langham and Wedgwood have collaborated to launch the bespoke version of the afternoon tradition – “The Langham Afternoon Tea with Wedgwood,” and last week the We Know Melbourne team went along to try it out.

Now if you’ve never been to an afternoon tea and are wondering what the fuss is all about, then we’d highly recommend you book yourself in for this afternoon tea at The Langham.

Upon walking up the grand staircase of the hotel, we were instantly hit with the crisp, sweet ginger flower signature scent which set the scene of the decadent events to come.

Sitting down to the tea in the Aria Bar and Lounge, we were immediately offered a glass of Perrier Jouet NV Champagne and given a menu with an extensive selection of teas to choose from. It was then we started to notice all the Langham signatures, like the pink roses, the “Langham Rose” Wedgwood china, and later the Langham pink suits worn by the service stylists, reminecent of the pink Chanel suit  worn by the late, Jackie O.

We were then treated to a brief presentation by Managing Director, Ben Singleton who explained that today wasn’t just about the delicious treats that we would be eating, but rather about the tea itself. We weren’t just going to be served by ordinary waitstaff, but rather tea sommeliers who had undergone an extensive 8 hour Wedgwood training course to pass an exacting exam on the art of making tea.  If we looked carefully, we would be able to identify them by their distinct pair of Wedgwood cameo brooch or Wedgwood cufflinks for the males. Showing off their expertise knowledge, the tea someliers had no problems recommending teas off the menu and their suggestions were perfect.

To accompany the tea, we were served a four tiered cake stand, laden with a selection of savoury sandwiches,  scones and dainty and delicate pastries. Each layer of the stand was carefully thought out and beautifully presented – from the freshness of the sandwiches and their fillings: Salmon, cucumber and horseradish creme fraiche, free range chicken with chives and lemon thyme, free range ham with tomato chutney; to the breakaway and melt in your mouth buttermilk scones with clotted cream and strawberry and rose petal preserve. But the real delight for us were the dainty delicate pastries on the top. Almost too pretty to eat, almost we said, each was to die for. Our favourites being the Mushroon shaped meringue with Chantilly cream, the passionfruit and mango macaron and valrhona Manjarri chocolate sphere, hazlenut and sable biscuit.

Two hours later, we were so full we could barely move (totally our fault for having a big lunch before), but we walked away wishing we could do afternoon teas at The Langham everyday. We felt completly spoilt rotten by the friendly and attentive tea sommeliers and staff at the Langham and would recommend it to anyone in Melbourne who wants to treat themselves (or someone special) to an afternoon of pure decadence.

Dog Lovers Show – Review

Last weekend the We Know Melbourne team were invited along to the Dog Lovers Show at the Royal Exhibition Centre.  Bringing all dog lovers, dog owners and dogs great or small together, the show was like we had died and gone to doggie heaven. Set over three days. the program was filled with all sorts of shows such as the doggie talent show, doggie high jump and the celebrity vet stage – yes, Dr Chris Brown was in the house.

The show was split over two levels with the stalls downstairs filled with plenty of doggie products that owners could pick up. There were raw treats, collars, leashes, and a clear winner amongst many, the Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard chew toys – we couldn’t resist picking a couple up for our own little sausage dog.

Upstairs, there were stalls filled with all different kind of dog breeds (and their owners) plus ones that we didn’t even know existed. Have you heard of an Italian Spinone before? We could have spent all day there cuddling all the dogs!

We walked away from the dog show knowing so much more pooch information than ever before and of course a bit of drool and hair from all the dogs that we got to pet! If you ever are thinking of getting a puppy, or just wanted to learn a little bit more about your furry friend, the show is the perfect opportunity to get an informed opinion of which breed is suitable for you and how to take care of them after!

Melbourne Food Porn Festival

You know them well. They’re the ones who have to take a photo of every dish before you dig in. The ones who have to get the perfect angle of every dish and when they show you their photos, you wonder why yours never turn out the same. And it turns out that the more we shoot and share our food, the more chefs keep making crazier and crazier dishes to capitalise. Everybody wins!

To help showcase the most stunning foodporn images captured by photographers at some of the best eateries around Melbourne, our friends at Yelp are hosting Australia’s first-ever Food Porn Festival in Melbourne. The Festival exhibition will showcase the 40 best foodporn photos from photo-obsessed Melburnians. There’ll also be a swag of awesome prizes for the top winners, including a stay at the Adelphi hotel (plus dinner and breakfast for two), a degustation for two people at Taxi Kitchen, a coffee masterclass with St Ali’s Ben Morrow, who recently won top prize at the 2016 London.

If you know someone who is food-obsessed enter them in here, or if you just want to drool over lots of food porn photos then the exhibition will be on May 18th, 6pm to 9pm at the  Smart Artz Gallery. We advise you not to go on an empty stomach!

Hot Tub Cinema Review

I love Bowie. I love cocktails. And who doesn’t love a hot tub. What an absolutely ripping combination, and I got to combine them all at Hot Tub Cinema – let’s dance!

All terrible puns aside, we were invited along to experience the newly opened Hot Tub Cinema, located outside The Common Man in Southbank. Film for the evening… Labyrinth. Aim for the evening…. kick back in a hot tub, consume a few beverages and..’forget about the baby.’

bowie

… no?

Upon entry, everyone is allocated a hot tub number, kitted out with a lit up water bottle (more about this later), and given instructions to set up your bar tab at the neighbouring bar, The Common Man. The whole experience is pretty slick, you can set up you bar tab, as well as pre-order cocktails and food to be delivered directly to your tub at a pre-arranged time.

This means you’ll never need to leave the warm waters of the tub… well for food or drinks anyway (wink).

Your water bottles are actually a clever multi-purpose tool, designed to keep you hydrated, because technically you are boiling in water like a potato for close to two hours, also as a beacon for your friends as they return from a bathroom visit to guide them safety back to your tub like a plane coming in to land (I didn’t witness even one instance of tub hopping – everyone was wildly polite) – but, when switched to flashing mode – a clever way to attract the attention of the fabulous bar staff so they can take your drinks order. Pretty fun.

There are three options for those who are keen give Hot Tub Cinema a crack. You can book an entire tub for you and five of your favourite people (our recommendation), for $360 (maximum 6 hot tubbers), choose to roll the dice and share with randoms to make new friends for $65 each, or if keeping dry is more your scene – you can also opt for a ‘dry ticket’ which gives you a deck chair in the centre of the tent which aren’t as fun as the whole hot tub experience – but if you are more about the movie that the overall tub deal, do actually give you the best view, these are just $30 and you still get the whole food and drink delivery service.

We were super lucky and shared a tub with just two other girls #winning.

You won’t see too much serious cinema here, the whole concept has been designed around maximum fun, so for the remaining four weeks of this six week season you’ll get to see classics like the Karate Kid, the original Ghostbusters, Superbad and Pineapple Express.

You can also take your pick of one of the many fun props lying around for ultimate photo opportunities, like a super cute captains hat, shower cap or beachball, and in a nod to the events major sponsor, Tourism Fiji – everyone gets ‘lei’d’ mid way through the movie, so by the end of the night you end up with quite a few souvenirs to take home as a reminder of your night. Check out their Facebook page for some of the cheeky pics fellow hot tubbers have posted.

Hot Tub Cinema is here for a short time, is selling out fast and wraps up it’s season on Sunday 29 May (screening Hitch if you are interested). Get five of your favourite people together, book a tub to yourselves and check it out for yourself.

Where: The Common Man, 39 Dukes Wharf, South Wharf

Wine & Chocolate Festival – Review

Do you enjoy wine? Do you find chocolate irresistible? If you’re anything like us, they’re are your two favourite things in life, so on Saturday we went along to the Wine and Chocolate Festival eager to indulge.

Offered a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon, the festival was held at Seaworks, Williamstown; right beside the pier with an amazing view. The sunny weather topped off an amazing afternoon along with some jazz music and DJ Mimi.

There were 13 stalls of wineries, 7 food trucks + 4 food vendors. The most fun and interesting part of the festival was of course the food pairing. Who would have known that Coedo Beniaka, a Japanese sweet potato crafted beer would go so well with chocolate? All the wine/beer pairing with chocolate were designed by a chocolate master chef from Belgium, Filip Tibos, and he truly knew what choccies went with what beverage.

If you were after some real food, you could find yourself right beside the pier with seven other food trucks, which the festival offered. We dined on a chicken paella from A Touch of Spain and the pork sliders with zing from Sliders of Tyres.

Overall the day, was perfect for catching up with friends, delicious wine, mouth-watering food and an incredible view of Melbourne skyline  by the water.

Les Mills Cycling Experience

Having done Cycling, RPM, Hi-Perf RPM, Spin, and other cycling varieties on offer by different clubs in the past, I was really keen to get into the saddle and give this latest creation by Les Mills a try, especially since I haven’t physically been on the stationary bike since December last year due to an injury.

I arrived at the venue at Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on Saturday morning and it was buzzing with hundreds if not thousands of fit-looking crowds, as it also coincided with the Australian Health & Fitness Expo. I ran into some friends and instructors that I knew, and was overjoyed to tell them that I was about to take part of the Australia’s first immersive cycle experience.  Expectations were certainly high!

After a quick introduction to the team (both from Les Mills & Reebok), we were escorted to the room, and my first impression with the massive screen, pumping music and sexy looking bikes was WOW!!!!

I positioned myself on the 2nd row in the centre, so I got to immerse myself better in the experience. Unlike traditional spin classes where the instructor faces the participants and tells them what to do, this time the instructor had his back to us and lead from the front.   Our instructor Chris cued the exercise moves and speed to synchronize perfectly with music and the cinema-quality video content on the screen.  We were literally transported to another world, and with each different track came a different world and different experience.  All were equally hard and immersive.

We were provided with a bottle of water & a Les Mills towel as we entered the room, and I was so grateful for them, as only after the first 2 tracks, I was sweating profusely and was so glad I had H2O on hand to rehydrate.

The 42-minute workout, ‘The Trip’ begins on earth, embarking on a journey to a futuristic city, then into outer-space with stars, moon, and galaxies all thrown in together to create a visually amazing, tripping riding experience.

I was literally sad when Chris signaled that The Trip was to end in approximately 2 minutes time.  I wanted more!!!

I couldn’t believe that I survived my first RPM session without getting bored or god-forbid, resenting the trainer. Did I enjoy it? I certainly did!  Were my legs sore the next day?  Hell Yes!  Would I do it again?  In a heartbeat!

Thank you for the privilege of experiencing Australia’s first immersive cycle experience.  Certainly exceeded my expectations!
