Dash and D’Bree Review

Like O.M.G.

These two ladies have come a long way from their Clap Rap, Glory Box days on Australia’s Got Talent. A classy-bogan duo of self-confessed ridicheads, Dash and D’Bree have brought their brand new rap cabaret – Fierce to the 2016 Melbourne Cabaret Festival (their first time at the Melbourne event) at popular arts hub ‘The Space’ in Prahran.

What is is about? Why being fierce of course.

A word they hear a lot about from Tyra Banks and drag queens and stuff. Right?

“Owning it. Working it. Strutting it. Loving it.”

Yeah?

Dash and D’Bree break their version of Fierce into two key elements. The ‘inner fierce’ (for when you know, you are feeling great, confident), and the ‘outer fierce’…. when you just look good. The latter being the most important… of course.

The show was super funny, had some catchy tunes and a smattering of cringe-worthy moments which made it a really fun night out. Hayley and Kat have a fantastic chemistry, and a fabulous ear for mash-ups with lyrics that initially sound like they are taking the mickey – but progress to giving you an ‘ah-ha – love it(!)’ moment.

My personal favourite… ‘Babe. Why do you sound like you are asking a question, even if you are not really asking a question…?’

So true.

Dash and D’Bree are in town for just 3 days from 23-25 June at the Space. But if you miss them, we highly recommend checking out this cheeky little snippet of their Fierce promotion during the Adelaide Fringe Festival: https://youtu.be/eFWR-Ehzvog

Where: The Space, Cnr Lt Chapel and Carlton Streets, Prahran

When: 23-25 June 2016

Melbourne Cabaret Festival Review: Rouge Romantic, Serenades from a Delinquent Diva

Having previously been along to see Torte e Mort: Songs of Cake and Death, at the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival, we were pretty excited to get to see the world premiere of Anya Anastasia’s Rouge Romantic, Serenades from a Delinquent Diva at The Space in Prahran.

A fantastic singer, talented musician and witty, quirky performer, Anya didn’t disappoint this time around. Although the show was different, a little shorter and with less set and costume changes, it was punchy, intimate and well, just gorgeous.

Switching between the two ‘alter-egos’ of, well, herself, Anya serenades her audience with songs born out of societal trends in love and romance the ups, downs and extremes of a woman’s passion when it comes to romance.

The songs are funny, catchy, have the witty edge of a creative intellectual, paired with the voice of Kate Bush. We would have loved a tiny little bit more narrative, but this certainly didn’t dampen the experience at all.

The Space is very intimate, and the audience interaction level in this show is high. At one point Anya does a handstand on a gentleman in the second rows lap, exposing her frilly bloomers to be taken off, shortly after laying across a couple’s lap and playing the maracas with her legs. Perfectly, of course.

Don’t think by sitting in the back row you’ll be safe either. This show is super hands on. We were seated front row centre and were simultaneously sweating bullets, yet hoping we’d get singled out for some kind of shenanigan.

The whole show ended literally in a shower of love. Well, red love hearts shot out of a cannon whilst Anya plays the keyboard, sings and claps with her feet. As absurd, and glorious as it sounds.

Anya Anastasia is one talented babe. Get along and check her out in the last couple of performances before her show ends on Saturday 25 June.

Where: The Space, corner of Carlton and Little Chapel streets, Prahran

When: 8.45pm Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 June, 2015

Some of the highlights we’ve picked out include:

WELCOME TO NORWAY

Director Rune Denstad Langlo brings some welcome levity to the highly topical subject of Europe’s migration crisis in this acerbic and insightful black comedy that pokes fun at the behaviour of Norwegians when pushed outside their comfort zones. Sharp, witty and unpredictable, this is a film that will put a smile on your face in ways you may not expect.

SPARROWS

A multi award-winning and sophisticated coming-of-age story about 16-year old Ari who has been living with his mother in Reykjavik. When he is suddenly sent to return to his hometown – a remote village in Iceland’s WestfjördsAri is pushed to take his first steps into manhood. A sumptuous visual feast, Sparrows casts the harsh, beautiful surrounds of Westfjörds as a character itself, and seethes with a sinister undertone thanks to a mesmerising score by former Sigur Ros keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson.

LOVE IS THE DRUG

Winner of the Audience Award at the Guldbagge Awards (Swedish Academy Awards), Staffan Lindberg’s film is a comedy about super rich Veronica (played by international star Izabella Scorupco) and Mike, a carpenter, and all that stands between their love, including stepchildren, ex partners and new parents-in-law.

THE WAVE (Bølgen)

Norway heralds Scandinavia’s first disaster movie, starring Kristoffer Joner, Ane Dahl Torp, Jonas Hoff Oftebro and Fritjof Såheim, the action packed film is based on the real-life event of the 1934 tsunami which hit Norway’s Tafiord as two million cubic metres of rock from a landslide triggered a wave of more than 85 metres high, and left 40 people dead in communities along the shore.

A Breakfast with a Difference – Long St Coffee

We first discovered Long St Coffee through their Instagram feed, a beautifully curated feed of breakfast dishes mixed with smiley happy faces. Upon clicking on to the website we discovered that the cafe not only dished up delicious food and coffee but also did so to make a difference.

“Long St Coffee is a social enterprise that provides 3-month hospitality traineeships to young people seeking asylum and refugees in order to improve their employment prospects.” The cafe first opened over a year ago now and was founded by husband and wife baristas Francois and Jane Marx.

Housed in a converted garage space on a quiet residential street, Long Street Coffee is  just a short walk  from the North Richmond Station. The Saturday morning that we were there, we had no problems finding  a seat, but got busier as the morning progressed. The space feels like you have walked into a good friend’s living room  (with a great hip-hop soundtrack) where you are happy to catch up over coffee and breakfast without the need to rush out the door.

Long St Coffee serve Proud Mary Coffee and delicious matcha shakes if coffee is not your thing. There’s also an all-day breakfast menu for those that like their sleep-ins and a lunch menu serving sandwiches and salads. We opted for the zucchini, mint and halloumi fritters with smoked salmon, poached eggs and lemon aioli and the presentation and the flavours were spot on.

Once you’re down with the meal, have a chat with the staff and hear their stories or shoot a hoop outside through the basketball ring on the outside wall. It truly is a breakfast with a difference.

Sippin’ on Gin and Juice – Four Pillars

As a Melbournite you’ll often find yourself in the situation of hosting interstate friends or family and, as you live here, and don’t see this fantastic city through outsiders eyes, putting pressure on yourself, wondering what you could possibly do to keep them entertained.

Problem solved.

Just under an hour outside of Melbourne, in the Yarra Valley township of Healesville, you can spend a delicious afternoon (and a small fortune on gin goodness) at Four Pillars Gin Distillery.

IMG_6544

Not necessarily new to the Yarra Valley scene, Four Pillars popularity has been on the up and up thanks to Melbourne’s love of boutique gin, fun little events like Juniperlooza 2015, Negroni Week and World Gin Day which have helped move gin drinking from its former hipster, bohemian scene to a more of a mainstream appreciation.

The team here live, breathe and love everything about gin. It’s really hard not to get caught up in their excitement and subsequently purchase everything put in front of you.

On arrival we 100% recommend paying $10 to enjoy a tasting with one of the crew. The really cool part about this is, if you keep your receipt, you can redeem that $10 back off any full size bottle purchase. And trust us, you’ll buy something.

If you can, ask for a tasting with Elton. This man knows his gin inside and out, and makes you so excited about gin you’ll want to keep coming back for more. I learnt a few little things about gin from Elton’s fabulous story telling like for example, gin is, in it’s simplest form, vodka plus juniper. The botanicals maketh the gin. Henceforth forever dispelling the myth of the ‘gin sads.’

They’ll tell you the story behind each product in their range (and trust us, each product has a story), plus all of those little ‘this-one-time-the-owners-were-discussing-this-and-from-that-this-product-was-born’ stories that make everyone feel like a VIP guest in this wonderful world of gin.

After your tasting you HAVE to have either a cocktail or Gin and Tonic tasting paddle. The Gin & Tonic tasting paddle comes with the rare dry gin, spiced negroni gin and the navy strength gin and you’ll be hard pressed to select a favourite – they’re all just as good as the other. For the cocktail we tried the Ginger Mule made with their Navy Strength Gin (a bottle of which may or may not have also been purchased) which was perfectly complemented with shared cheese board  – the perfect finish to the afternoon with friends.

Four Pillars also have a really quirky, sustainable way of reusing the botanicals and flavors from their gin distilling process. They make marmalade from the orange peel and flesh once it’s done it’s job and, if you were lucky enough to attend Four Pillars during their World Gin Day celebrations, you might have heard about their gin pig project, and perhaps sampled some of the goods like we did!

Having previously spoken to the owners at Juniperlooza, we were looking forward to seeing the final product of this project, where all of the left over botanicals were feed to some free range pigs on a local farm, thus infusing them for the purpose of feeding the hungry hoards on World Gin Day, with juniper infused pork. Sounds a little strange, but we loved it.

Where: 2a Lilydale Road, Healesville VIC 3777 Australia

Opening hours: Seven days a week, 10.30am – 5.30pm and until 9.00pm on Friday and Saturdays (tastings only available until 5.30pm).

Call ahead and book for large groups.
