Submergence: in cinemas 16 August 2018

Submergence is a love story that takes us into the extremely different worlds of our two protagonists, Danielle Flinders (Alicia Vikander) and James More (James McAvoy). They meet by chance in a remote hotel in Normandy where they both prepare for a dangerous mission. They fall in love almost against their will, but soon recognize in each other the love of their lives. When they have to separate, we find out that James works for the British Secret Service. He’s involved in a mission in Somalia to track down a source for suicide bombers infiltrating Europe. Danielle ‘Danny’ Flinders is a bio-mathematician working on a deep sea diving project to support her theory about the origin of life on our planet. Soon, they are worlds apart. James is taken hostage by Jihadist fighters and has no way of contacting Danny, and she has to go down to the bottom of the ocean in her submersible, not even knowing if James is still alive…

Your chance to win a double pass on us here.

Wim Wenders (The Salt of the Earth, Wings of Desire) directs this romantic thriller based on the novel “Submergence” by J.M. Ledgard from a screenplay by Erin Dignam (The Last Face). Submergence stars James McAvoy (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Split, X-Men: Apocalypse, Atonement, The Last King of Scotland) and Academy Award®-winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina). Cameron Lamb produced the film, along with Wim Wenders and Uwe Kiefer for Neue Road Movies in Germany, Jean-Baptiste Babin for Backup Studio in France and Juan Gordon for Morena Films in Spain.

A multi-layered story that embraces some of life‘s most profound concerns, Submergence is based on the novel by J.M. Ledgard. A journalist who covered society and politics across Africa for The Economist magazine, Ledgard was inspired by his experiences living and working in Somalia.

James McAvoy concurs: “Audiences will be moved by a beautiful love story and they will be terrified for the characters but I think that they are going to be surprised at how educational the film is as well – about what is happening in our world both geo-politically and in terms of the danger the world is in physically. That does not sound like a love story and yet it is – it’s about a love for your mission, a love for your belief, a love for your planet, a love between the characters, a love for your God; it is a love for all those things.”

Hot Pot at Master Den’s

Melbourne, you’d be safe and warm this Winter if you are at Mater Den’s. This secretive poppu uppu (Japanese translation of pop-up) down Flinders Lane provides great service, amazing Melbourian vibe and most importantly; mouth watering hot pots!

Walk pass Fonda towards Spring Street and then pass the parking lot. Just when you wonder where Master Den is, you’ll see white posters pasted in a small hole in the wall.

Yep, there it is, Melbourne’s little secret hot pot place, available this Winter only. The most Melbourne thing about it is that you’d need to BUZZ to get in. #VIPeveryday

At Mater Den’s, they cater for beef lovers, seafood eaters and vegetarian dieters. Menu changes daily because at Mater Den, they only serve the best cut of beef and freshest seafoods.

Enjoy a drink or two? We highly recommend getting their Hot Pot matching drink selection, especially paired to the hot pot flavour you choose. The drink selection starts you off with a beer, follow by sake and finish off your night with a glass of wine.

If you are like us who always have space for something sweet after dinner; Mater Den’s provides traditional Japanese desserts like Ichigo Daifuku (Strawberry Mochi). We highly suggest getting the ginger + Fuji apple sorbet, a nice refreshing dessert to cleanse your palate.

Melbourne, do us a favour and visit Mater Den’s Poppu Uppu hot pot restaurant this Winter. Trust us, you’ll fall in love with it like we do. It is the place to take your friends who come and visit Melbourne. The place to be if you enjoy an intimate date night. The place to dine if you love getting fed and still have a decent conversation with your mates.

See you there Melbourne, and we look forward to hearing which hot pot broth is YOUR favourite.

P.S
Don’t forget to get their Udon noodles, they are slippery good and most importantly… they are handmade! Lastly, continue your night out upstairs at Hihou (Japanese translation of treasure), a Japanese influenced bar owned by the same owner as Mater Den’s.

A TASTE OF TASMANIA ARRIVES IN THE HEART OF MELBOURNE

The annual VIN Diemen festival will return to Melbourne on Sunday 12 August and for the first time will be hosted at Pure South Dining for one true Tasmanian experience, celebrating the region’s exceptional food and wine culture.

Brought to life by Wine Tasmania, in partnership with master of events Revel, better known for the world’s biggest Pinot festival, Pinot Palooza, VIN Diemen will give guests an opportunity to explore Tasmania’s culinary delights without leaving the city.

Tasmania is Australia’s hidden gem, where the wild meets a cool, calm and collected climate with an abundance of natural beauty. This year, VIN Diemen Melbourne will showcase the unparalleled quality of Tasmania’s wine and food, with an extended line-up of the island’s leading vintners paired with Pure South Dining’s artisan producers.

Guests can enjoy a glass of sparkling on arrival before winding their way through each region, tasting an array of varieties from every corner of the island. The day will welcome over 20 Tasmanian wine producers featuring 100 different wines from the likes of Tolpuddle, Moorilla, Pipers Brook, Moores Hill Estate and many more.

Moores Hill Estate owner, Fiona Weller said, “VIN Diemen is a one-off opportunity to experience Tasmania’s food and wine offerings. We’re delighted to be involved in sharing what defines our region and why Tasmania is such a unique place.”

Situated on the banks of the Yarra River, the newly refurbished two-story restaurant will transform into a gourmet isle for the day, offering an unrivalled feast of Tasmania’s finest and most bespoke fare. Pure South sources the highest quality ingredients from farmers, fisherman and artisan producers across the region, some of which are exclusive on the mainland, flown in by light plane. VIN Diemen will feature produce from rare-breed Mt Gnomon Farm pork, St Helens Oysters, Tongola Farm, bass strait scallops and more.

The event will also include beverages from Tasmanian suppliers Strait Brands serving vodka and gin along with Pagan Cider.

Wine Tasmania Chief Executive Officer, Sheralee Davies said, “we are extremely thrilled with the opportunity to bring VIN Diemen back to Melbourne for its fourth year, with a twist. This year’s event, presented in partnership with Pure South Dining, will feature Tasmania’s outstanding food alongside our cool climate wines to present a Tasmanian feast like no other.”

The best hot chocolates in Melbourne

Oh Winter… sometimes you wonder if you actually hate this cold season or in fact love it to bits. Despite the coldness, there are a few things we know you love about Melbourne Winter – the fashion, the mulled wine and of course the hot chocolates.

We have hand picked our top five favourite venues in Melbourne, where the best hot chocolates are served. Warm up this winter with our favourites below and tell us which one is your favourite, or maybe share YOUR favourite hot chocolate venue with us if it is not already mentioned below!

Atypic Chocolate, South Melbourne
Based out of South Melbourne Market, Atypic follow a profound ‘bean-to-bar’ process, showing off the chocolate making process through their street facing window.

They welcome picky patrons, inviting you to customise your winter warmer by selecting your milk and your chocolate blend. Make your selection from white chocolate matcha, Solomon Island dark chocolate, spicy dark chocolate or a seasonal dark chocolate blend and enjoy.

Little Big Sugar Salt, Abbotsford
Looking for your chocolate hit without a steaming side of sugar? LBSS have created a HC made entirely out of health.

Created from house created almond ‘malk’, blended with artisanal Xocolatl (Kew) chocolate and sweetened with just dates and sea salt, chocolate and nuts make good bed fellows in this dairy and refined sugar free delicious drink.

Hash Specialty Coffee & Roasters, CBD and Camberwell
A list like this wouldn’t be truly Melbourne without something weird. If you stroll down Hardware Lane, you can get yourself a truly social media worthy offering.

You’ll be presented a wooden board, with a high, curling cup of house made fairy floss and a beaker of decadent melted Mork chocolate. Pour the beaker over the floss and savour in the sticky, yet somehow unbelievably smooth belly warmer. Their brunch is brilliant, too.

Brunetti, Carlton, CBD & Melbourne Airport
The classic, of course.

It’s the richest of the rich, the darkest of the dark and you definitely don’t need a large (but you probably should anyway). You haven’t had a hot chocolate in Melbourne until you’ve had one of these beautiful, intense drinks alongside one of the hundreds of desserts the big B offer. Go hungry and get a cannoli, too.

Yarra Valley Hot Chocolate Festival
If you still haven’t got your fix, embrace the winter chill and head south to visit the Yarra Valley Hot Chocolate Festival.

MoMA at NGV

1 May 2018: In an international exclusive, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) presents a major exhibition of modern and contemporary masterworks from New York’s iconic Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in the world-premiere exhibition MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art, opening 9 June 2018 at NGV International in Melbourne.

Co-organised by the NGV and MoMA, the exhibition features more than 200 works – many of which have never been seen in Australia – from a line-up of seminal nineteenth and twentieth-century artists, including Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Diane Arbus, Agnes Martin and Andy Warhol. Bringing the exhibition up to the present are works by many significant twenty-first century artists including Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Olafur Eliasson, Andreas Gursky, El Anatsui, Rineke Dijkstra, Kara Walker, Mona Hatoum and Camille Henrot.

MoMA at NGV is the largest instalment of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition series to date, for the first time encompassing the entire ground floor of NGV International. Showcasing MoMA’s multi-disciplinary approach to collecting and the breadth of its collection, the exhibition display features works drawn from the Museum’s six curatorial departments: Architecture and Design, Drawings and Prints, Film, Media and Performance Art, Painting and Sculpture, and Photography.

MoMA at NGV will explore the emergence and development of major art movements, and represent more than 130 years of radical artistic innovation. The exhibition will also reflect the wider technological, social and political developments that transformed society during this period, from late nineteenth century urban and industrial transformation, through to the digital and global present. In recognition of both MoMA and NGV’s long-standing dedication to the study and presentation of architecture and design, the exhibition explores the deep-seated connections between twentieth-century art and design practice, with a particular focus on developments that shaped Europe in the 1920s and ’30s and the globalised world of the 1960s and ’70s.

Unfolding across eight loosely chronological thematic sections, the exhibition opens with ‘Arcadia and Metropolis’, examining how artists at the dawn of the 20th century responded to the rise of cities. ‘The Machinery of the Modern World’ highlights the simultaneity of foundational avant-garde movements (Futurism, Cubism, Orphism, Dada) and references MoMA’s 1934 Machine Art exhibition, while ‘A New Unity’ presents the cross-media manifestations of the Russian avant-garde, de Stijl, the Bauhaus and Joaquín Torres-Garcia’s School of the South. In ‘Inner and Outer Worlds’, iconic Surrealist paintings are seen alongside contemporaneous works that negotiate the relationship between interior and exterior landscapes. ‘Art as Action’ highlights key examples of Abstract Expressionism and expands to include other forms of kineticism in the 1950s. The exhibition’s largest section, ‘Things as They Are’, encompasses the varied production of the 1960s and ’70s, from Pop art to Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, followed by ‘Immense Encyclopedia’, focusing on gestures of appropriation and reflections of identity from the 1980s and ’90s. The last section of the exhibition, ‘Flight Patterns’, considers contemporary ideas of movement, migration, and globalisation. Installation and performance works (Olafur Eliasson’s Ventilator, Simone Forti’s Huddle, and Roman Ondak’s Measuring the Universe) will also run throughout the course of the exhibition.

The Hon. Premier Daniel Andrews said: ‘Picasso, Van Gogh and Matisse: only in Melbourne will you see this roll call of history’s most iconic art figures – it will be an experience not to be missed. MoMA is one of the most prestigious modern art galleries in the world and its partnership with the NGV is testament to Victoria’s reputation as an international cultural destination.’

Tony Ellwood, Director, NGV said: ‘This exciting exhibition will showcase an unparalleled collection of modern and contemporary art and design. We are delighted to be working with MoMA to bring such an extraordinary and diverse selection of works to Melbourne. Our visitors will be able to experience first-hand the momentous change and creativity in the development of modern art, and consequently appreciate contemporary art and design with greater understanding.’

Glenn D. Lowry, Director, MoMA said: ‘MoMA’s mission is to share our story of modern and contemporary art with the widest possible audience, to encourage the understanding and enjoyment of the art of our time. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to share these important works from nearly every area of our collection with the NGV and the many visitors who will take advantage of this rare opportunity.’

MoMA at NGV will be on display at NGV International from 9 June 2018 – 7 October 2018. Tickets and information are available via the NGV website: NGV.MELBOURNE
