Drink, Eat, What's On

Australia’s most decadent food event returns this August with a month long, Hot Chocolate Festival set to warm up visitors to Victoria’s Bells Beach or Yarra Valley regions.

Lovers of hot chocolate will have 31 different reasons to brave the winter chills and venture to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie or the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie for this seasonal celebration of a winter warming favourite.

European Chocolatiers at each destination have devised 31 different flavours over 31 days in August – with eight different hot chocolate creations introduced each week. A couverture chocolate base, seasonal and exotic ingredients, fresh herbs from the kitchen garden and inspiration from local surrounds will take the classic chocolate and milk combination to hot new heights.

Expect temptations such as decadent Hazelenutella, Piping Pistachio, Heavenly Chestnut, Triple Chocolate Brownie, Mint Madness, Cookies and Cream, spicy Pumpkin Chai and even Smashed Avocado and a Black Sesame Crunch, while a collection of showstoppers will get temperatures rising when hot chocolates get adventurous and interactive with elements such as exploding marshmallows, melting chocolate discs and edible drinking cups.

All ‘limited edition’ hot chocolates in the Festival’s line up will be served with an extra shot of milk, dark or white melted couverture and of course the ultimate accompaniment – a giant handcrafted marshmallow. Hot Chocolate connoisseurs can enroll in special Tasting Sessions on offer throughout the month long Festival. For just $20 per person, visitors can sip and savour eight different hot chocolate flavours – then get hands on creating three ‘hot chocolate spoons’ from 50 different ingredients to take home and whisk into hot milk for their very own, personalised hot chocolate decadence anytime. Bookings are essential for the 45-minute hosted tasting sessions.

“This Festival has been such a hit with visitors to our Yarra Valley and Bells Beach destinations – what better way to warm up than a leisurely country or coastal drive for the most amazing couverture hot chocolate?” says the Chocolaterie’s Managing Director, Leanne Neeland.

The recently opened Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery at Bellbrae (at the start of the Great Ocean Road just 20 minutes from Geelong) and the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery in Yarra Glen offers a sweet destination for chocolate lovers of all ages. Combining striking showroom, factory and all day café set amongst emerging fruit and nut orchards, kitchen garden, landscaped grounds and play areas, entry is free and visitors of all ages are welcomed with generous free chocolate tastings. Specially recruited European Chocolatiers at each destination handcraft over 250 different chocolate products from the finest Belgian couverture chocolate; as well as turn their talents to making gateaux, tarts and pastries for the all day cafés and creating artisan ice creams. Many chocolates are inspired by the nearby surrounds, draw on local ingredients or use fresh herbs from the kitchen garden.
