A Celebration of Nelson Mandela – Mabiba The Musical

Energetic and compelling new stage show Madiba the Musical – a Celebration of the Life of Nelson Mandela opens in Melbourne in October.

Madiba the Musical, which celebrates the life of the former South African leader, who would have turned 100 in July this year, is interwoven with stories of the fight against apartheid and forbidden love in a troubled land.

Playing the role of Nelson Mandela is Perci Moeketsi, a South African star of stage, television and film, who dared to dream the impossible, encouraged by Mandela’s own words: “It is impossible until it’s done”.

Perci joins Tim Omaji;  Tarisai Vushe; Blake Erickson; Madeline Perrone; Barry Conrad; Ruva Ngwenya; David Denis along with  Courtney Bell and Riley Sutton to star in this energetic and compelling new stage show.

African dance and vocal traditions are given a contemporary setting alongside eternal love songs and stirring anthems in a show that tells of Mandela’s lifework as a lawyer and activist for peace through the story of young artist Will, who is the victim of apartheid in South Africa.

Madiba the Musical began its journey in France with its world premiere at Le Comedia Theatre in Paris in January 2016.

Neil Crocker said “Madiba the Musical is a production with both a fantastic and moving story, and some truly fabulous and joyous music and dance. This cast we have assembled of such authentic and talented actors, singers and dancers will deliver to audiences a memorable night of informative, challenging and uplifting theatre”.

Popular Australian Actor and singer, Tim Omaji, also known by stage name Timomatic, plays the role of Sam Onatou, a young black activist who is arrested in South Africa. In prison he meets the man known as “Madiba”, Nelson Mandela.

Tarisai Vushe plays Sam’s fiancée Sandy who works for the family of a white policeman, Peter Van Leden, played by Sydney actor Blake Erickson.

Madeline Perrone plays the policeman’s daughter Helena, who Sandy asks to help free Mandela. Barry Conrad, Sandy’s younger brother William, falls in love with Helena. As a fictional parallel story to Mandela’s work as a lawyer and activist for peace, the romance between young artist Will and white Afrikaans girl Helena tells of the struggle and tragedy of the apartheid regime.

Following her performance as Shirelles lead singer Shirley Owens in the successful national touring production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Ruva Ngwenya plays the role of Winnie Mandela.

With music and Lyrics by Jean-Pierre Hadida and book by Jean-Pierre Hadida and Alicia Sebrien, English co-adaptors Dylan Hadida and Dennis Watkins, MADIBA The Musical Australian Production will be directed by Pierre-Yves Duchesne and associate director Dennis Watkins with musical direction by Michael Tyack and choreography by Johan Nus.

Sebrien and Hadida said that in creating Madiba The Musical, they wanted to tell the story of Mandela’s pursuit of peace and reconciliation in his homeland. They said the musical was also timed to mark 25 years since the abolition of apartheid in South Africa, and the year that Mandela would have turned 100 if he was still alive.

WIN: 1 x double pass to The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Competition now closed

Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) looks the part of a perfect high school girl. But after she’s caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night, Cameron is quickly shipped off to a conversion therapy centre that treats teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” At the facility, Cameron is subjected to outlandish discipline, dubious “de-gaying” methods, and earnest Christian rock songs—but this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely gay community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers, and she’s able to find her place among fellow outcasts.

Writer/director Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) and co-writer Cecilia Frugiuele sensitively adapt Emily Danforth’s acclaimed eponymous coming-of-age novel and create a refreshingly original teen movie. Balancing out inherent drama with understated humor, The Miseducation of Cameron Post looks at a teenage girl grappling with pain and loss, but at the same time, she is creating a family on her own terms and learning what it means to empower herself by having confidence in her own identity.

Interested? Well, here is your chance to watch the movie on us as we have 10 x double passes to giveaway! Simply fill out the form below and share the news on your social platforms (the post must be in public mode) and tag us @weknowmelbourne for a bigger chance to win. WORLD-FIRST: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S 50 GREATEST WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHS EXHIBITION

Melbourne Zoo visitors will be the first in the world to view the very best wildlife photographs from 130 years of National Geographic magazine at an immersive exhibition launching this spring.

50 Greatest Wildlife Photographs, curated by renowned nature picture editor Kathy Moran, is a celebratory look at wildlife with captivating images from some of National Geographic’s most iconic photographers, including Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols, Steve Winter, Paul Nicklen, Beverly Joubert and David Doubilet.

The pop-up exhibition will make its global debut as an outdoor installation in Melbourne Zoo’s historic Carousel Park and be accompanied by an INDE augmented reality (AR) experience, titled Air, Land & Sea.

Air, Land & Sea gives viewers a unique chance to travel to an ever-changing watering hole where a diverse range of animals, from Africa to the Arctic, graze, drink and interact with the environment around them.

Melbourne Zoo director Kevin Tanner said the spectacular photographs and AR experience would provide zoo visitors with an opportunity to see wildlife from around the world.

“These extraordinary photographs show what some of the world’s most wondrous wildlife looks like in their natural habitat,” Mr Tanner said. “As a zoo-based conservation organisation, we are doing our very best to ensure a future rich in wildlife, and we are extremely proud to debut this stunning exhibition at Melbourne Zoo.

“Our hope is that, after viewing these stunning images and connecting with the wildlife at Melbourne Zoo, visitors will be compelled to remember that all animals deserve our greatest respect, awe and preservation.”

For 130 years, National Geographic has utilised its storytelling expertise to connect its readers to the great outdoors. The organisation pioneered the art of wildlife photography, from the very first such image of a reindeer in 1903, with a steady stream of extraordinary images of animals in nature.

The 50 Greatest Wildlife Photographs exhibition shows an unmatched legacy of artistic, scientific and technical achievement. Showcasing the evolution of photography, the images convey how innovations such as camera traps, remote imaging, and underwater technology have granted photographers access to wildlife in their natural habitat.

We are thrilled to announce that we have 2 x tickets for giveaway. Find out more about the competition here.

Meet the Makers of Pure South is an exclusive event encompassing the entire Pure South Dining room upstairs, and is expected to sell out.

His chicken is some of the best you’ll find in the world,” says Pure South Dining’s owner Philip Kennedy, who has been flying in Nichols Chicken directly to Pure South Dining since 2009.

Guy Robertson is a fifth-generation Tasmanian farmer who set out to dedicate a farm to reviving heritage breeds in modern farming; and now his free-range Wessex Saddleback pork is in high demand by some of Australia’s best chefs. In 2010, Pure South Dining was his first restaurant customer and first customer on the mainland. Oysters flown directly from St Helens and Bass Strait scallops from Stanley will also feature on the five-course dinner menu.

Matching this outstanding produce with eight of Josef Chromy’s award-winning wines, selected by the winemaker himself, makes it a culinary event for the most discerning calendars. Josef Chromy was instrumental in the development of Tasmania’s wine industry, while his state-of-the-art winery was recently awarded the Australian Good Food Guide Chef Hat. Wine Selector Magazine’s Paul Diamond, will also host the event, adding his encyclopaedic knowledge of Australian cool-climate wines.
