A BRIEF HISTORY OF DRAG

The UK’s queen of live vocal drag, Velma Celli, is bringing her showstopping cabaret, A Brief History of Drag, to Australia in January and February.

Following a successful UK tour and a smash hit run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, A Brief History of Drag is a heartfelt, camp journey through some of the best moments in drag history including music, pop culture, film and theatre.

Velma’s killer vocals will have audiences dancing along to songs from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kinky Boots, David Bowie, RuPaul and more.

Intercutting the musical performances are stories from drag history which shine a light on political decisions that affected gay culture and historical moments like the infamous Stonewall riots.

Velma has played almost every venue in London including an impressive two-year residency at the Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square, as well as the legendary Birdland and 54 Below in New York City. She has performed with pop icon Anastasia and musical theatre legends including Ruthie Henshall, Kerry Ellis and Francis Ruffelle, and recently appeared in the Olivier award-winning circus show, La Soiree.

Velma is the alter-ego of West End star Ian Stroughair. Stroughair has appeared in hit musicals such as Cats and Fame and most recently, received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Angel in Rent.

Stroughair said, “This show is a celebration of my favourite moments in drag history, many of which inspired me to do drag. It’s a laugh a minute and a tear the next – a true cabaret rollercoaster. I can’t wait to take Australian audiences with me on this ride!”

Summer Nights – the Night Markets Return for 2019

The Summer Night Markets kicked off last week again and despite being a somewhat miserable night, the event proved to be as popular as ever with crowds turning up to get a taste of their favourite food stalls and check out some new flavours for the 2018/19 season.

The Market boasts 60 global street food stalls and this year the delicious dining options are better than ever with all the usual favourites like Mussel Pot, Running Bull Sangria and Wonderbao returning again with their popular offering, as well as donut balls of every possible flavour including Nutella, salted caramel and melted marshmallow from Taki’s Balls – you’ll find these quite addictive, but they are perfect to share.

If you like your dinner with a side of Instagrammable flair, be sure to check out Flying Noodles for their servings of noodles that float in mid air over the plate, over chopsticks held by seemingly invisible hands.

Beer, wine and cider is also on offer from local breweries, Brick Lane, Coldstream and Mitchelton Wines.

The Summer Night Market is also a great option for Christmas present shopping with a plethora of handmade goods from it’s 100 speciality shopping stalls peddling essential oils, art, handcrafted vegan soaps, leather goods, hats and even puppets, all on offer for very affordable prices.

As an added bonus this year, located between the two main food halls is an awesome chillout area with games like Jenga, chess, checkers and totem tennis, perfect for the kids to take a short time out or challenge your mates to a quick little hustle.

The Summer Night Market is on every Wednesday, rain or shine from now until 20 March (excluding boxing day) and from 5-24 December will also boast Melbourne’s first outdoor summer ice-skating rink, brought to market-goers by Air Canada – so you can show off your mad skating skills. (You’ll need to pre-purchase your tickets via the Summer Night Market website).

Where: Queen Victoria Market (cnr Queen and Therry Streets, CBD) – jump on the 19, 57 or 59 tram to Stop 7, Elizabeth St or Tram 58 to Stop 9, Peel St (BONUS it’s within the free tram zone).
