Alumbra Bar & Club

Alumbra gets a makeover

Before we start this article, we must confess that although we have always known of the club/bar Alumbra, it’s Docklands location scared us and we have never made the trek there. Recently revamped and given a facelift by Roar Projects, last Wednesday they held an exclusive VIP event to launch the new look and the We Know Melbourne team went along to check it out.

The venue had been given a new creative identity, based on the streets of New York and upon entering the warehouse conversion, we couldn’t help but feel that we were transported to a bar in the Upper West Side. All the guests were glammed up in high heels, dresses and suits. The venue itself now had an increased capacity with an extended floorplan. We loved the idea of the outside terrace for a cheeky cocktail under the stars.

However the main attraction of the night was the foodie partnership with master chef Daniel Wilson – The  man infamous for bringing to Melbourne, Huxtable and those delicious Huxtaburgers. The New York style menu on the night  featured some of  his big city favourites  including– Bad dog with frank, smoked cheddar, vodka and tomato relish on a charcoal bun, honey glazed lamb ribs with mint yoghurt and Big Apple loaded fries with molten chipotle cheese, spring onion and bacon bits. Of course, the menu also featured a  New York cheeseburger which was damn delicious – we could have eaten 10 of them!

We must also mention the New York cocktails and drinks which flowed freely courtesy of key beverage partners Moet & Chandon and Ciroc Vodka. Just the right thing to get any party started.

Although we can’t compare and contrast the old versus the new, we have to say we were impressed with the venue itself, (those glass floors looking over the water!!) and the New York style menu makes Alumbra’s revamp worth the visit if you’re ever in the Docklands and feel like dancing the night away!

Melbourne trams

17 Minute Tram Stories

Did you know the average length of a tram ride in Melbourne is 17 minutes? Well, the folks at Yarra Trams knew this fact and decided to do something about it in conjunction with the Melbourne Writers Festival. The result is 17 minute Tram Stories, a series of new writing pieces, from writers that will be attending the Melbourne Writers Festival, which each take about 17 minutes to read. There’s a new story every week from July 24th to August 30th.

The first week’s story by Michaela Maguire concerned the nature of time and our perceived lack of it in today’s modern society. It even referenced one of We Know Melbourne’s favourite science experiments; the 1927 “Pitch Test” by Professor Thomas Parnell. Professor Parnell spent nearly 50 years waiting to observe the falling of one of the elusive droplets from a beaker of pitch. The drops only fell about once every 15 years and somehow, despite his vigilance, Professor Parnell managed to miss the falling of every drop during his life. The experiment is still ongoing at Queensland University.

The following week’s story by Mohammed Ali Baqiri was something totally different detailing the experiences of a young Afghan refugee arriving in Melbourne. It was a very moving and illuminating piece.

There can’t be anything much more “Melbournian” than reading a Melbourne Writers festival writer on a Melbourne tram so get to it at http://mwf.com.au/17-minute-stories/

Grand Hotel with Robyn Annear

A Grand Evening with Robyn Annear

On a typical, cool wet Melbourne winter evening in August, 42 literary buffs attended an exclusive, three course dinner at the Grand Hotel for a night of wine, fabulous food and an enthralling, intimate chat with author Robyn Annear.

Partnering with The Wheeler Centre, this event was one of three to be hosted by the M Gallery Collection Hotel’s in Melbourne, the first, being held at The Lindrum in May, and the last to be held at The Como in September.

The night kicked off in grand style, all guests greeted with their choice of champagne or the hotel’s signature drink – a John Batman Apple Martini, chosen for the hotel’s historical location significance, as it was originally the site of Melbourne’s founding father’s fruit orchard.

The conversation flowed amongst guests as did the wine and before long, everyone had polished off their generous entrée, mains, and the main event kicked off.
Interviewed beautifully by Wheeler Centre representative, Helen Withycombe, Robyn Annear was charming, entertaining and a perfectly eccentric. Guests found themselves listening to a story about Melbourne Town Hall, but being taken off a on spectacular tangent involving tales of shoeboxes, buttons, boots preserved in mud and naked democracy – all the while hanging onto every word.

Her passion for making Melbourne’s historically significant events was riveting – which was clearly shown in her popular books ‘Bearbrass: Imagining Early Melbourne’ and ‘A City Lost and Found: Whelan the Wrecker’s Melbourne’ – both of which were available for sale on the night – the queue of which to get signed, went out the door at the end of the evening.

Shaken not stirred at Please Don’t Tell

When we heard that the boys from New York’s most famous speakeasy were coming to Melbourne, we couldn’t help but get excited, and so did the rest of Melbourne it seemed. Tickets sold out (or should we say booked out – entry was free) within minutes and we were lucky enough to secure tickets for the first session.

Now, we’ve visited a whole lot of speakeasies on previous trips to the US, and we had heard about Please Don’t Tell, but low and behold we never got there. Call it what you will, but we think this was definitely a sign, that we had to go!

In case you don’t know what a speakeasy is (one of our friends who came along actually had to google it first), old mate, Wikipedia defines it as:

“an establishment that illegally sells alcoholic beverages. Such establishments came into prominence in the United States during theProhibition era (1920–1930).”

Although these days, it would be more used to describe bars with a retro style, think something out of the 1950s that only “people in the know” know about.

Please Don’t Tell set up at the Black Pearl Bar Fitzroy, who’ve built up their reputation on shaking up some of the best cocktails in Melbourne. In New York, Please Don’t Tell is entered through a phone booth in Crif Dogs (a hot dog joint) , and to keep with this tradition, Black Pearl set up the same (minus the hot dog joint). Up the stairs, and next to the back door was the red phone which we had to dial before being entering. Once the secret door opened, wew were transported into a whole different era with the staff dressed 50s style and the boys Jim Meehan and Jeff Bell from PDT ready to mix up our concoctions.

We were lucky enough to sit at the bar with front seats for the infamous cocktail show (and got a few words in with Jim, when he wasn’t too busy). The menu delighted us with a whole lot of traditional cocktails but with a twist. Bundaberg Rum was the flavour and cocktails included some unique flavours like the Jan Collins with mandarin (our favourite) and Tying the  Sheets with green walnut, preserved figs and Spanish Brandy.

Bluebonnet BBQ was in charge of the food, and served up good old American Style gourmet hot dogs. While the dogs were tasty and just the right amount of carbs to wash down our cocktails, we were a little disappointed that they were cold. But luckily we were there for the cocktails not the food. Before we knew it, our two hour session was up and our little slice of a New York experience was over. It’s easy to see why these boys have such a cult following, we’ve got to say those cocktails were some of the best we’ve ever tasted.
