Interview: Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival Director, Trevor Alexander

Melbourne, a festival city, has always been an enormous supporter of the performing arts community with Fringe, Comedy and the Cabaret Festival to name just a few of these events on her busy calendar.

The Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival, debuting in Melbourne for the first time in January 2017, is the latest of one of such events, and is set to entertain musical lovers with a classic line-up of well-loved family musical favourites, timeless adult productions and new Australian shows in the iconic Athenaeum Theatre.

We spoke to the event’s founder and Artist Director, Trevor Alexander about his vision for the event and his personal journey to bring this concept to creation.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Sports mad as a child, I was dragged off the school football field at the age of 15 by a girl I had a crush on, to be in the school musical.  The rest, as they say is history. An ‘undiscovered talent,’ I had my first lead role the following year, followed by roles in amateur musicals. I was president of an opera company at 21 and studied opera simultaneously both at the VCA and Melbourne Uni. By 22 I was designing sets as well as doing lead roles for pro-am productions and singing in the chorus of The Australian Opera, but I was hungry to know everything about theatre.  I started directing at 23, and in one two-year period I did 20 musicals and operas, rehearsing performing or directing up to 5 shows at once. At 30 I set up my own company producing and touring operas. That was followed by writing plays and musicals, novels, film scripts and producing my own TV show ‘Curtain Up’ for Channel 31.

I now have extensive experience over the past 40 years in ‘the business’ including 25 years as an Artistic Director, stage and screen writer, manuscript assessor, performer, director, set designer, composer, stage manager, dramaturge, producer and production manager in singing and acting coach in opera, film, television, theatre and musical theatre.

With a such a broad and varied repertoire, what do you like best (if it’s possible to choose) on the stage under the lights, or bringing things to like behind the scenes via artistic direction?

Despite apparently coming into my prime, I happily ‘retired’ from the stage 15 years ago; I much preferred writing, directing and producing and having the artistic vision to create something special.

This is the first year that musical theatre has been celebrated in Melbourne through a dedicated festival (a huge achievement). What was the journey like in the lead up to bringing this to life?

Huge and long. I first had the idea back in 1984; it was a time when Melbourne was poised to become the next West End. But certain events happened and that concept was shelved. It raised its head in 2007 when I was asked to be the Chairperson of a proposed London Musical Theatre Festival. After doing all the leg work, setting up the dates, venues such as Covent Garden etc, I handed the ‘blueprint’ over to a ‘Brit’ who subsequently changed all the plans and instead applied for funding – hence why there is no London Musical Theatre Festival.

Around the same time, I became close friends and associates with Chris Grady who was building Musical Matters in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Fringe and we had long discussion of what was needed, not just in London, but anywhere musical theatre played. Soon after that, in 2009, I was directing a workshop of a new musical by Bill Kotswinkle (ET fame) with lyrics and music by Lieber and Stoller for NYMF and took note of how NYMF operated.

All the time it was all resurrecting my thoughts about a festival in Melbourne; we had the theatres, we had the population, we had the musical theatre community. And there were others, some of whom I had mentored, who went off down the path of setting up such a festival, or of developing new Australian Works. But they all failed to manifest.

During this time I took 5 years off to write RED GRANITE, a book series on what is really below the sand in Egypt that we are not being told about (that’s another story!). That completed, it seemed the time was right to set up the MMTF. That decided it was a matter of selecting shows, theatres, performers, the usual production things.

How do you want people who attend the 2017 Festival to walk away feeling?

It depends on the show really, but, engaged, amused, happy, that life is worth living and they got more than value for money.

What do you love most about the musical theatre scene in Melbourne?

Big question. Basically everything; its broad range of shows, it’s vibrancy, it’s spontaneity, its passion, it’s accessibility.

What is your all-time favourite musical and why?

Easy – It’s an opera – Turandot. Extraordinary score. As for a traditional ‘musical’ it’s West Side Story. There are several landmark musicals that changed the face of musicals, Show Boat, Oklahoma, Les Miserables, and so on. But for me West Side Story has it all. It is such a powerful story and an extraordinary score. Having directed it twice I still cry even just thinking about the ending. THAT’s what musical theatre is all about for me – moving an audience.

Where do you see the Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival going in 2018?

Well, we do have VERY big plans on the drawing board for 2018 and beyond which I would love to tell you about, but not just yet, lets crawl before we run. If the Melbourne public get behind this year’s shows, and why wouldn’t they, Great Shows, Great Casts and Great prices, then the festival will grow quite rapidly and quickly become THE major Musical Theatre Festival in the world.

The Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival runs from 6-28 January 2017.

Summer Shakespeare @ The Bot

Rather than the usual Friday night beers, we were invited along to check out Melbourne Shakespeare Company in their latest adaptation work, amongst the gorgeous surrounds of St Kilda Botanical Gardens for something a little different.

As the Melbourne nights are becoming warmer and sunnier, the parks are becoming fuller with people cramming every little last bit of enjoyment into their day and there was a solid turn out to this event.

This summer, the group brings The Tempest to life amongst the garden walls, mixing it up with modern twists like relevant popular music injections as well as small costume and Australiana quirks which allowed them to make this classic tale their own, yet still retain elements that allow you, just for one moment, to imagine you are back in the 17th century watching the same story unfold in front of you (which is what we love so much about Shakespeare).

Many of the key roles were played by women, which also allowed the tale to take a different direction, adding a powerful femininity and twist that again, allowed the crew to make their own mark.

The great part about performances in the Botanical Gardens is you can bring your picnic rug, some wine, cheese and sandwiches, and have a gorgeous cultural experience in the late afternoon Melbourne sun for very little dollar investment.

The weather forecast for next weekend is not too bad at this stage, so if you are looking for an inexpensive evening out after work (tickets are only $30 each) pack your picnic basket, grab the vino and get on this.

Are these Melbourne’s Best Dumplings?

Tucked away down Market Lane lies one of Melbourne’s best dumpling restaurants, HuTong Dumpling Bar. With a cult following, HuTong Dumpling Bar first made it’s mark on the Melbourne dumpling scene back in 2008. Going from strength to strength, the dumpling bar still solidly books out on most nights which is a testament to just how delicious their dumplings are.

With three levels of dining on offer, this restaurant offers everything from Shanghai street food to spicy Sichuan and northern China specialities. There’s an extensive menu with a range of dumplings, soups, seafood, local and seasonal dishes, including the fiery, red-hot oil dishes.

The scalding Shao Long Bao meat and soup dumplings are a specialty and if you don’t already know the rules on how to eat this we suggest you follow this guide. We put our skills to the test last week following this guide and after a couple of failed attempts we think we nailed it. The textures of the dumpling itself was on point, slightly chewy but not tough. The pork inside was perfectly cooked and the soup not too salty. A definite must try when you visit.

The options for vegetarians are limited in the dumpling range (the spinach dumpling was the only option) and throughout the menu, but this mimics menus in China where meat is the flavour of the day.

For those after something more than just dumplings, we recommend ordering the famous braised chicken in chilli, the ma po tofu or the crispy fragant duck, all of the same exceptional standard as the dumplings.

There’s a high turnover at HuTong Dumpling, but you will never feel edged out of the door before you can even put your chopsticks down. The prices are reasonable and it’s a great option for a larger group setting. Just remember not to wear your brand new dress, as slurping dumplings can get messy.

Australian Open 2017

Why we love the Australian Open

Melbourne is known for being the sporting capital of Australia and with first the major sporting event of 2017 less than a couple of months away, we thought we’d share why the Australia Open is one of our favourite events on the sporting calendar.

1.   The Tennis

It’s hard not to get wrapped up in the hype and electric atmosphere of the first grand slam of the year. Dating all the way back to 1905, the Australian Open was initially named the Australian Championship before changing it’s name to the Australian Open in 1905. Over the years we have seen so many tennis greats take to the courts including Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, the William Sisters, Pete Sampras Andy Murray and Martina Hingis. In the 2015 tournament, there was a record 14.3m unique visitors to the Australian Open grounds.

2. The Location

When the Australian Open first started, the big players initially didn’t want to make the journey to the south side of the hemisphere due to the long travel times. However since the initial days, all the big players make it a regular stop on their tennis calendars. With several courts to choose from including the Margaret Court Arena, Rod Laver Arena, Hi Sense Arena, and the show courts, you can guarantee never to miss out on the action. Just a short ride from the CBD, Australian Open ticket holders are able to enjoy the FREE Yarra Trams shuttle services operating on route 70 from the CBD to Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena. The service operates until one hour after the end of play, including twilight and night sessions.

3. Affordability.

The Australian Open caters for all budgets. From avid tennis fans who want to splash out on Men’s final tickets to fans who just are keen to get into the spirit and purchase a grounds pass, it’s easy to watch a game no matter your budget. If you can’t afford a ticket to major courts, we recommend the grounds pass where you can enter the show courts or watch all the games on the big screen while still having the atmosphere of being at the game.

4. The Australian Open Festival & Open Sessions

Stop by the Australian Open Festival before or after the game and dine on some of Melbourne’s favourite foodie destinations. Last year we saw the likes of Mamasita, Gazi, Uncle, Gelato Messina,  Huxtaburger, plus more, with 2017’s festival lineup still to be announced. Next year’s Australian Open will also be preceded by a free two-day music festival at Birrarung Marr with Jimmy Eat World as the headliners. Children will be able to experience Grand Slam tennis for just $5 at Australian Open 2017, with a new child’s ground pass designed to welcome more young tennis fans to Melbourne Park.

The Australian Open runs from 16 January – 29 January 2017.

Royal Croquet Club

Royal Croquet Club Returns for Summer

Melbourne’s favourite garden party returns to Birrarung Marr this December. Since it’s debut three years ago, the Royal Croquet Club has been summer favourite and has gone from strength to strength.

This year there’ll be more of a focus on music with a killer lineup of musical acts including Dope Lemon (Angus Stone), Jarryd James, Hayden James, Aston Shuffle, KLP and Touch Sensitive.

As usual, there’ll be plenty of croquet to be played, Pimm’s cups to be drunk and entertainment to keep you there well into the late hours of the evening. Adding to the festival fun, The Parlour a 70-seat pop-up theatre, will be set up to show acts from the Adelaide Fringe Festival, along with roving entertainment and street theatre.

To keep you from going hungry, some of Melbourne’s most loved restaurants will be there including burgers from 8bit, barbequed skewers from Hoy Pinoy, smoked meats and sandwiches from Up In Smoke, and everyone’s favourite Gelato Messina will be returning  with their infamous soup tins filled with gelato.

When: 8 December – 23 December

Summer Menu at Nieuw Amsterdam

Although Hardware Lane is a regular for many tourists to Melbourne, as locals our visits to this famous laneway in the recent years has been far and few between. However, it seems that just in the last couple of years, it has undergone a revival with the opening of many restaurants and cafes that we keep returning to.

One such restaurant is Nieuw Amsterdam, located at the very top of Hardware Lane. A New York style bar and eatery, Nieuw Amsterdam is set over 2 levels with the light-filled restaurant on the top floor and the late night bar downstairs open till 5am.

Having recently launched their new menu, the We Know Melbourne team went along to try it out.  We started off the evening with the Jammy Hendricks cocktail –  Hendrick’s Gin, Rose Liqueur, Lemon Cucumber Jam, with a splash of Prosecco – with perfect fresh summer flavours, this drink could easily be drunk on it’s own or complemented with some lighter dishes.

For starters we had the Zucchini Flower Poppers, Chicken Nuggets and Salmon Ceviche. Each flavour distinct on it’s own, the standout was the Zucchini Flower Poppers fried and stuffed with jalapeno and cream cheese. How can anyone go wrong with anything fried with cheese?!

To go with our mains, we drank the Man of Blood (a frightening name) – bursting with flavour – Tapatio Anejo, Solerno, Suze, Hellfire Habanero Shrub served with Gentian Toffee.

Mains included the Rainbow Trout, Grilled Octopus and Flinders Island Lamb Rack. Now we’re not normally big meat eaters, but the Lamb Rack really stood out for us. The meat was juicy and tender and the sherry jus completed the dish.

By this point, we were stuffed but when we heard there was banana split for dessert we just couldn’t say no. Topped with peanut butter custard and peanut brittle, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that this split was one of the best ones we’ve had in Melbourne. There we said it, if you’re going to have dinner at Nieuw Amsterdam, make sure you leave room for this one, it’s worth it.

Niuew Amsterdam is located at 106-112 Hardware St, Melbourne and is open until 3am most nights and 5am on Saturdays and Sundays.
