Next Matriarch Exhibition 2018

Next Matriarch carries a conversation between First Nations female artists and artworks, from ancestral healing and the dystopia of modern society, to the language of pop culture and the Sovereign female body as a carrier of children, resilience and knowledge at the Koorie Heritage Trust.

‘’We are delighted to be presenting Next Matriarch, as part of our activities for Reconciliation and NAIDOC Week.  This year, NAIDOC’s theme Because of her we can – celebrates the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make – to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation,’’ says Tom Mosby, CEO, Koorie Heritage Trust.

Next Matriarch calls on the strength of First Nations women past, present and future and presents new and recent photography, painting, video and installation works by seven leading First Nations female artists from across Australia: Paola Balla, Ali Gumillya Baker, Hannah Brontë, Miriam Charlie, Amrita Hepi, Nicole Monks and Kaylene Whiskey.

Highlights include Hannah Brontë’s fierce new rap music video, Umma’s Tongue-molten at 6000˚, visualising environmental destruction in relation to the female black body; Nicole Monks’ powerful threechannel video self-portrait, Mother; Kaylene Whiskey’s playful paintings that reimagine super heroes and pop idols in remote desert community landscapes; and dancer and choreographer Amrita Hepi’s large scale installation Dance Rites, which considers the body as the ultimate archive to probe the idea of what it means to prove cultural authenticity through the dance floor or performative space.

“This exhibition is about strength, sisterhood and the integral role that these artists have in contemporary art in Australia. The works in Next Matriarch speak to the Sovereign authority that female First Peoples have in community, healing and in activism. The artists share lived experiences grounded in their culture and community but also look forward and construct future imaginings of the Blak Matriarchal space. This exhibition is both an ode to sisterhood, those who have come before and a message for the future female,” said co-curator Kimberley Moulton.

Established in 1985, the Koorie Heritage Trust is a bold and innovative not-for-profit arts and cultural organization.  Aboriginal owned and managed, the Koorie Heritage Trust provides opportunities for all people to learn, connect and re-connect with the rich living cultural heritage of Aboriginal Victoria originating from a 60,000-year-old history.

Next Matriarch at the Koorie Heritage Trust, Federation Square opening Saturday 2 June until Friday 13 July 2018.  Free entry  www.koorieheritagetrust.com.au

When Pizza Meets Bagel

Just when you thought you couldn’t have any more carbs, there’s Five and Dime Pizza. Owned by Zev Forman, the owner of Five and Dime Bagel; where everything is made in a traditional-ish way.

Zev said “There’s Australia style of pizza, or there’s real pizza… The Italian style.” As a man of traditions, and loves sharing his love of food; he has not only brought delicious bagels to Melbourne, also some big and thinly sliced pizzas made in the traditional Italian way. We weren’t surprised how Five and Dime Pizzas came in giant slices. So big that you have to eat it in the New Jerseyan (or is it New Yorker?) style – folded it in half.

Five and Dime Pizza opened its door just a few weeks ago. This new kid in town is on UberEats and Deliveroo, but we think you should visit them at the store and watch the pizza making in action.

Five and Dime Pizzas’ are made with love and care by Alex, the owner of HazelBark Patisserie. With many trial and errors, Alex and Zev have designed the perfect pizza dough accompanied by delicious yet simple pizza menu, now sharing their passions for pizza with us Melbournians.

Zev told us their tasty pizza dough takes three days to make. It is all about letting the yeast doing its magic. At Five and Dime Pizza, they offer vegan options too! Who would have known vegan sausages can taste better than usual meat sausages? We couldn’t believe it until we tried, and as the Italians would say it “Super delizioso!”

Go on and order that giant pizza bagel to share with your mates, we know you want to. Don’t forget to order the yummy bagel pudding as your dessert too!

When: Tuesday – Saturday, in Store from 3pm
Where: 16 Katherine Place, Melbourne
Order: On UberEats or on Deliveroo

Circus Oz returns back to Melbourne with Precarious

In their 40th year, Circus Oz tumbles back home to Melbourne to premiere their new show, Precarious, under the heated Circus Oz Big Top. Across the winter school holidays the tent will be nestled within the trees of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria with three weeks of shows from 26 June – 15 July 2018.

Inspired by the garden surrounds, Precarious is a 70-minute non-stop spectacle of acrobatic mayhem for audiences of all ages. The Circus Oz ensemble will unearth innovative circus acts to create an exciting three-dimensional world that examines the fragility that exists between humanity and nature.

The outstanding skills and talents of the Circus Oz ensemble will include extraordinary foot juggling, jaw-dropping aerial rope and tippy ring, mesmerising roué cyr, Chinese pole and hula hoop – all hilariously woven together with original music from the live Circus Oz band.

Circus Oz Artistic Director, Rob Tannion, joins forces with independent director, Kate Fryer, to craft Precarious and create the mayhem that is the ministry of nature – an absurd lo-fi bureaucracy filled with phenomenal acrobatics, spectacular aerials, live music and physical comedy.

Brought together by their shared love of storytelling in recognisable, yet surreal worlds, Tannion and Fryer will continue to push circus innovation, extending expectations of circus skill and apparatus through collaboration with the Circus Oz ensemble, musicians and production team.

The Precarious Co-Directors explain, “We are in precarious times environmentally. How much more can our ecosystem take? Are we approaching the tipping point? Can humanity restore the natural balance before it is too late?”

Tim Entwisle, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Director and Chief Executive, comments, “We are delighted to be partnering with Circus Oz’s show Precarious. The show’s nature theme perfectly complements the new location. We look forward to welcoming its audience to the Gardens, and we hope to foster a strong, ongoing relationship together.”
