The Melbourne Magic Festival

It should be no surprise that Melbourne has a festival entirely dedicated to magicians and the art of magic. After all, we already have festivals dedicated to salami, hijabs and daffodils, why not sleight of hand as well?

In fact, the Melbourne Magic Festival has been amazing and amusing Melbourne audiences for over a decade. After ten years at Northcote Town Hall, the festival is moving to Collingwood in 2018, finding a new, larger home in The Melba Speigeltent for first two weeks in July.

Each year, the festival hosts a range of free and ticketed events that see up and coming conjurers performing alongside the world’s greatest illusionists. The festival also includes regular favourites including the entire improvised ‘Magicspots’, two spectacular gala shows and the nightly mayhem of ‘The Best Of The Magic Fest.’

Budding magicians can take magic classes or compete against other pint-sized entertainers in the ‘Australian Junior Championships of Magic.’ Meanwhile, the international superstars like Woody Aragon, Mr Tango and Carisa Hendrix fill the 200 seat speigeltent with close up miracles and grand illusions.

“We had magic novices attend our magic classes in our first few years who ended up selling out audiences in our tenth,” said festival director, Tim Ellis. “The Melbourne magic festival isn’t just about watching magic, it is about being a part of it.”

This year also sees the festival joining forces with Vision Australia to bring to ‘Magic In The Dark’ to Australia for the first time ever. Created by Chilean magician Juan Esteban Varela, ‘Magic In The Dark’ is performed in complete darkness, allowing blind audience members to experience magic while allowing sighted audience members to experience the world as blind people do.

“The Melbourne Magic Festival strives to promote new, exciting artists working in the medium of magic.” said Ellis. “So while audiences will certainly be treated to classic card tricks, ladies sawn in half and rabbits pluck from the dark confines of a top hat, they will just as likely see groundworking, experimental works designed to redefine how the public views magic.”

And with magic become more and more popular each year, there is not reason to think that the festival won’t be around for many years to come. The rise of YouTube and instagram magicians as well as TV shows like Australia’s Got Talent and Penn and Teller’s Fool Us have inspired a whole new generation of magicians and magic fans.

If that is the case, then audiences should get their tickets before they disappeared. Your chance to win tickets on us! We have 1 x Family pass to Magic In The Dark (value of $100), 1 x Family pass to The Late Night Comedy, Magic & Something Ellis Show (value of $100) and 1 x Family pass to Dee Dee Darling’s Bubble Magic Show (value of $78). Enter here and be ready to see where magic happens.

MASTER DEN’S POPPU UPPU

Master Den, the keeper of secrets at Melbourne’s Japanese dining and drinking destinations, Izakaya Den and Hihou, can finally reveal the hot secret he has been keeping a tight lid on. Master Den’s Poppu Uppu will open for a limited time on Wednesday 20 June in the site formerly home to Kappo, offering a fun, new Japanese hot-pot experience to keep Melburnians warm through winter.

The Poppu Uppu, a take on the Japanese translation for pop-up, is inspired by the special ‘nabemono’ dining experiences of Japan, where a pot is filled with broth and allowed to simmer, before vegetables and protein are gradually added to cook. There are dozens of varieties of hot pots, each with a distinguished flavour and style, and Master Den has created his own special versions of shabu shabu, a Hokkaido-style seafood nabe, and an elegant Japanese mushroom hot pot, that guests make themselves at the table guided by the friendly staff.

The Shabu Shabu features a konbu flavoured broth, with a plate of wagyu rump, topside and sirloin 6+, with the option to add speciality cuts like rump cap, scotch fillet and Japanese favourite, Cube roll. The Hokkaido style Seafood Nabe has a light miso flavoured broth, and is filled with Tasmanian Salmon fillet, local mussels and Mackeral, or add local flathead fillets, New Zealand pippies, Coffin Bay Oysters, Crystal Bay prawns and Harvey Bay scallops. The Special Mushroom Hot Pot comes with a konbu, sake and soy flavoured broth, silken tofu, and a selection of Japanese mushrooms including shiitake, enoki, shimeji, oyster, and king brown. All three hot pot varieties are served with an assortment of vegetables and accompaniments like wombok potato, spring onion, house-made special sauce (a must try!) and ponzu sauce, goma (sesame sauce), Momiji oroshi (Japanese daikon & chilli), and yuzu koshu (Japanese seasoning made from chili peppers, yuzu peel and salt). The hot pots are finished with Udon noodles, handmade by Udon specialist and Izakaya Den and Nama Nama’s original Head Chef, Yosuke Furukawa. Snacks will include sansho pepper edamame, coffee-cured salmon sashimi, tofu and shitake mushroom rice puff tempura, and a cameo appearance of Hihou’s fried chicken. Simon Denton, co-owner of Izakaya Den, Hihou and Master Den’s Poppu Uppu, has always had a strong affinity with Japanese culture and wanted to introduce the Japanese way of hot pot to more Melbournians. “What better winter experience than sharing a hot pot with someone you love, a group of your friends or family, on a cold Melbourne night”, says Denton. “It’s comfort food at its best – fun, unpretentious, and full of flavour and ritual”.

The drinks list has been designed to give guests many reasons to ‘Kampai!’. There will be cocktails, served from Master Den’s bar upstairs, Hihou, such as the ‘KITANO Beat’, a Negroni-style winter cocktail named after his favourite Japanese Actor Takeshi ‘Beat’ Kitano, made with Suntory Kaku whisky, Campari, Saika Kokutou Umeshu (Japanese plum wine), Patron Coffee and orange. Local and Japanese craft beers and sake that Master Den exclusively imports from Japan for his venues have been carefully selected to complement the different hot pots. A full-flavoured, but easy-to-drink Hitachino Lager goes perfectly with the Shabu Shabu, while a fruity Saison or the crisp and citrusy Wa Wa Wa Junmai sake from Nagano is best served with the Hokkaido Seafood Nabe. Award-winning Raffaele Mastrovincenzo, the original sommelier at Kappo, has put together a small, fun & delicious list of fresh ‘now’ wines to suit each of the Japanese hot pots. Guests can expect new releases, limited editions and quirky matches.

The space has been given a casual yet quirky makeover with some signature touches from Master Den himself. Master Den’s Poppu Uppu encourages bookings, but walk-ins are also welcome.

Review: Holy Cow! James Joyce slaughters the Scared Cows of English Literature

Photography: Bernard Peasley

Each year on 16 June, Dubliners and Joyce enthusiasts around the world gather together to commemorate and celebrate the life of Irish author, James Joyce for Bloomsday – aligning to recreate the tale told in the day of the life protagonist, Leopold Bloom in Ulysses, Joyce’s most celebrated novel.

Bloomsday in Melbourne, now in it’s 25th year of Joycean fiction celebration again took up it’s annual challenge to dramatise an element of Ulysses with a fresh perspective for the masses.
In 2018, writers and committee appointed Director, Jennifer Sarah Dean – Artistic Director for the Melbourne Shakespeare Company to take on this challenge and apply her own unique style.

Holy Cow!, this years’ interpretation is a theatrical adaptation of ‘Oxen of the Sun’ – the 14th chapter of Ulysses, and takes the audience on a satirical journey through over 30 literary periods starting out prim and proper with Medieval Morality plays and continues through ever-increasing levels of debauchery and english language degradation, reaching a somewhat modern day finale knee deep in Dickens, Ruskin and early twentieth century society.

Having not read the book, and bringing along a very basic level of Ulyssian insights, I found the storyline to be quite fast paced, with many twists and turns – at times to the uninitiated a little hard to keep up, but portrayed in an accessible way – and definitely inspired our next choice of reading material. A literary buff’s dream, interwoven with countless themes and layers which appealed both to those with a deep understanding of the text and others who enjoy reading historical literature and come, eager to absorb.

Holy Cow! was humorous, witty, and featured a super-intelligent script, punctuated with puns and gags reminiscent of a Monty Python sketch, flawlessly executed by a high-calibre cast on opening night. We’re looking forward to what Bloomsday 2019 brings.

Holy Cow! was but one part of Bloomsday Melbourne’s annual celebrations in 2018.
For those who seek to further their knowledge or delve deeper into Joycean prose amongst fellow peers, the committee offers seminars and lunch each year. Check out their website for details on upcoming events.
