recharge: A New Mindfulness Studio

In our hyperconnected world it’s getting harder and harder to just switch off. Whether it be switching off your phone, stopping email notifications at work or even just saying no to people, we are in a constant battle to  be in the moment and content with who and where are. Luckily for us Melbourne people, Dr Richard Chambers and Ray Good are bringing to Melbourne it’s first ever mindfulness pop-up studio. Located in a sleek, light-filled warehouse space in Fitzroy, recharge is a mindfulness pop-up studio that encourages people to take their eyes off their screens, leave their stress at the door, pull up a cushion and learn how to recharge. Our Odyssey: Ithacans in Melbourne

This November the Immigration Museum will be showcasing their new exhibition, Our Odyssey: Ithacans in Melbourne.  This new exhibition will showcase objects, textiles, photographs and stories that celebrate the achievements of Melbourne’s Ithacan community set to the sounds of Cavafy’s ‘Ithaca’ narrated by journalist Angela Pippos.   It tells the tale of Melbourne’s first Greek migrants as it relates to the magic and mythology of 2 Greek epic poems – Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ and Cavafy’s ‘Ithaca’. ‘Our Odyssey: Ithacans in Melbourne’ has been developed in collaboration with the Ithacan community and coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. Binge on Musical Theatre

Inspired by the event of the same name in New York, and launched for the first time in November by founder and Artistic Director Trevor Alexander and the fabulous Dolly Diamond – the first ever Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival will be kicking off in Melbourne this January with a line up set to make everyone fall in love with musical theatre all over again. Priced for a serious musical theatre binge with tickets ranging from only $25-$69 this event, celebrating local performers, writers and producers will feature a classic line-up of well-loved family musical favourites, timeless adult productions and new Australian shows and will run from January 6th through to the 28th making it a fantastic (and super affordable) school holiday activity. Johnston St Fiesta

Explore the sights, sounds and delicious smells of Latin America at the Hispanic Latin American Festival. From November 19 -20, Johnston St will be turned into one giant carnival with street dancers, Latino food stalls, free dance classes, DJ’s,  live entertainment and of course plenty of jugs of sangria. This colourful festival always sees a massive turnout by locals and latinos alike so we recommend getting there early. Connoisseur Food and Design Weekend

This November, Broadsheet are joining forces with ice cream aficionados, Connoisseur for a one-off weekend food and design market. Make your way to this Brooklyn inspired market  and indulge in food from Melbourne’s favourite Brooklyn-inspired restaurants (Bowery to Williamsburg, 5 and Dime Bagel, Nieuw Amsterdam, Shawcross Pizza) and  ice-cream flavours from New York ice-cream lords OddFellows – who have recently collaborated with Connoisseur to serving variations of their world-famous ice-cream sandwiches. All icecream sandwiches will be made with biscuits from Tuck Shop Take Away and flavours include Bed Stuy: peanut butter & pretzel with sweet cream, Coney Island: golden syrup with a butter swirl and corn nuts, Flatbush: chocolate brownie with chocolate custard, and Williamsburg:matcha green tea with white chocolate waffle cone. Juniperlooza returns to Melbourne

After the success of last year’s all gin festival, Juniperlooza will be returning to Federation Wharf for another fun-filled gin weekend. Sip on gin from the very best independent Australian and international gin producers while enjoying delicious food, entertainment and music by the river.  There’ll be a total of twenty-four local and international producers  showcasing their gin, so you’ll never go dry. Food Truck Park Collins Street Pop-up

City workers now have another reason to leave their desk at lunch! As of November 7, The Food Truck Park™ have parked up to the ‘Paris’ end of Collins St. The pop up Food Truck Park™ will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a daily rotation of one-off culinary truck delights each and everyday from Monday to Friday. Summer Night Markets

The Summer Night Market (SNM) are bringing the fun back to your Wednesday nights. An annual summer favourite, the SNM brings an array of great seasonal food and entertainment offerings including unique food options, deliciously refreshing drinks and a buzzing summer atmosphere to enjoy the various live music on offer. Kicking off on Wednesday 16 November with a disco funk theme, each week will bring a different theme and free music with roving entertainment.  Included in the line up for summer are That Gold Street Band, a funk and soul party band from Melbourne, The Everymen, a combo of Piano and Drums blended throughout a bottomed blues vibe and James Kenyon who threads narrative through music to re-tell Australian stories. Night Noodle Markets

It’s that time of the year again. A favourite on all foodies calendar, the Night Noodle Markets! From November 10-27 for 18 glorious nights of Good Food Month, Melbourne’s idyllic, much loved Birrarung Marr will be transformed into an Asian hawker-style market where you can dine on all sorts of spicy, sweet and sour asian dishes along with thirst quenching drinks. Complete with more than 30 food stalls, a record 56 stalls three bars plus nightly entertainment, this year is set to be bigger and better than ever before.  There’ll be all the usual favourites like Longrain, Chin Chin, Wonderbao, Red Spice Road, as well as desserts from Gelato Messina and Black Star Pastry x N2 Extreme Gelato. Zoo Twilights

Melbourne Zoo’s live music program, Zoo Twilights is back for it’s third year, and the line-up for 2017 is bigger and wilder than ever! Highlights this year include Hoodoo Gurus, Peter Garrett & The Alter Egos,Warpaint, The Rubens, Kurt Vile, Tegan and Sara plus more. The evening shows kick off after 7pm and ticket holders can explore the Zoo at dusk with animal exhibits open exclusively for Zoo Twilights guests from 5:30pm. All proceeds will go towards fighting the extinction of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot among other furry friends, an initiative which is part of a five-year plan.
