Japanese Film Festival 2018

The Japanese Film Festival will showcase 30 features and one fascinating documentary across Canberra (17 – 21 Oct.), Brisbane (24 – 28 Oct.), Perth (31 Oct. – 4 Nov.), Adelaide (9 – 11 Nov.), Sydney (15 – 25 Nov.) and Melbourne (22 Nov. – 2 Dec.). Each city features carefully curated programming by The Japan Foundation, Sydney, from star-studded drama Yakiniku Dragon and tear-jerking true story The 8 Year Engagement, to viral genre-bender One Cut of the Dead, and one of the latest works from master filmmakers including Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters – winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or in 2018). The Festival in Sydney and Melbourne will open with viral microbudget genre-bender One Cut of the Dead. Submergence: in cinemas 16 August 2018

Submergence is a love story that takes us into the extremely different worlds of our two protagonists, Danielle Flinders (Alicia Vikander) and James More (James McAvoy). They meet by chance in a remote hotel in Normandy where they both prepare for a dangerous mission. They fall in love almost against their will, but soon recognize in each other the love of their lives. When they have to separate, we find out that James works for the British Secret Service. He’s involved in a mission in Somalia to track down a source for suicide bombers infiltrating Europe. Collins234 Striking Film Festival

In an exciting night of opportunity, emerging and student filmmakers will be exhibiting their short films at the Collins234 Striking Film Festival. The first of its kind to be held at the stylish CBD retail destination on Thursday 4 August, the film festival will see $10 from every ticket sold donated to the Melbourne City Mission Evolution Arts Program. “The Evolution Arts Program is for young people aged from 16 to 24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, not currently studying or employed and have an interest in creating art. The Program keeps these young people connected and engaged whilst learning new skills,” said Sherri Bruinhout, Director of Homelessness and Justice Services from Melbourne City Mission. The Striking Film Festival has over $2,500 in prize money to be awarded on the night. Awards include: Most Outstanding Film, Best Student Film, Best Film Over $5,000, Best Film Under $5,000 and the People’s Choice Award.
