Interview with Michelle Carey, MIFF Artistic Director

If you ask any Melbourne cinephile what their favourite months of the year are, it will no doubt be the months of July & August. The reason? The Melbourne International Film Festival, of course. Held over two and a half weeks and attracting over 200 000 visitors each year,  MIFF showcases the best of the best cinema from Australia and around the world. We took a moment to chat to Artistic Director, Michelle Carey ahead of the festival to find out more about what goes into making the festival so unique and pulling together such a giant program for it. Can you tell us a little more about  how you became MIFF Artistic Director and what your favourite part of being the artistic director is? It wasn’t a very straightforward path,  I have experience in my 20’s in music, working in radio on bands and events and that kind of thing, and then on a trip to Europe in  my late 20’s discovered film was my passion and so I just started volunteering. Scorsese

ACMI  are celebrating the Godfather of all directors, Martin Scorsese at the upcoming Scorsese exhibition this May. From Taxi Driver and Goodfellas to The Age of Innocence and The Wolf of Wall Street, there is no doubt in any film buff’s mind that Martin Scorsese is one of the world’s most influential directors. “Whether it’s wolves, bulls, butchers or taxi drivers, Scorsese’s complicated anti-heroes navigate mean streets of their own morality, torn between rebellion and acceptance, sin and redemption. While his characters spiral out of control, Scorsese captures every frame with masterly control.” The exhibition will feature over 600 objects (including costumes, hand annotated film scripts, film stills plus more) and a selection of footage of his work in  film, documentary and is curated by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum for Film and Television, Berlin. Moonlight Cinemas Opening Night

Moonlight Cinemas is a quintessential summer event on the Melbourne cultural calendar. Based in the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens, the cinemas three month program screens a whole bunch of films every evening over summer, except for Mondays. The We Know Melbourne team were invited along to the opening night last Thursday to watch an advance screening of Suffragette. Slightly worried about the cooler weather in the lead up, Thursday evening presented itself as a perfect balmy evening. Red carpet arrivals kicked off the evening where each person could get their own paparazzi snap as they entered, before being ushered to the VIP section where we had sparkling wine, popcorn and bean bags to enjoy during the film. The Moonlight Cinema Candy Bar offers up a range of hot food (including the delicious fried chicken sliders that we ate) and snacks, as well as of course, alcohol and other beverages. The perfect way to spend a summer’s evening. When: 3 December – 27 March Where: Moonlight Cinemas, Royal Botanic Gardens Visit the website here.  We Know Melbourne …
