Red Spice Road

Recently some of our We Know Melbourne team got to visit well known South East Asian restaurant Red Spice Road in McKillop Street. The first thing that strikes you about this place is that it is a large venue but cleverly divided into separate zones each with it’s own feel and style. The obvious starting point ti at the McKillop street bar where we enjoyed a nice glass of wine and probably the standout dish of the night being an amazing appetizer of spiced duck ball on a wafer of fresh, chilled watermelon. The duck was quite spicy but combined with the watermelon it was just right! We toured the other sections of the restaurant which included the appropriately named Long Room which is home to a couple of very long communal tables which are a signature feature of Red Spice Road to encourage the feeling of shared eating that the owners feel is central to the Asian dining experience. The Brass Coq

Hidden away in the legal district of town is the quaint, unassuming, Vietnamese restaurant, The Brass Coq. And when we heard of the name and the team behind it, we couldn’t pass up the invitation to sample their menu. Although smaller in size, the industrial fit out gives it a fresh, bright and warm atmosphere. In fact, the whole place had a bit of a feel of being at a dinner party at a friend’s house, who just happens to be great at Vietnamese food and rolling out the banging hip hop tunes. Set over two floors (restaurant downstairs and a bar upstairs for the weekends), this contemporary Asian eatery serves up traditional Vietnamese dishes with a twist. Not afraid to experiment with the flavours, all the dishes we got to try were fresh, flavoursome and just the right blend of spice.Some of the dishes included the Papaya Salad, Braised Pork Belly Bun, Stir Fried eggplant and for dessert the nutella baos.
