Aside from the breath-taking ocean views and sunsets, The Espy spoils you with variety, featuring live music stages, dining options including a flavour-filled Cantonese restaurant and 12 bars across 5 levels. Options, options and more options!

Midsumma Review: Rebel

It’s been three years this January since the passing of legendary rock star David Bowie, and since his death many tribute shows have popped up – but none have pushed the boundaries of blended performance crafts quite like Rebel.

Premiering as part of the 2019 Midsumma Festival program, and choreographed, directed and produced by Melbourne’s Highwire Entertainment, Rebel is a solid act, combining music, circus acrobatics and visual art into a live concert, glam rock and roll cabaret with heart stopping physical feats, a costume selection to die for and enough talent to make you sick.

We witnessed roller skating trapeze, a hoops routine performed in eleven inch wedges, flames, flare and a bloke working an aerial pole in a pair of high top chucks like it was nothing, backed by a band of triple talented musicians. Bowie’s best hits were brought to life by the exceptionally charismatic Stewart Reeve, who’s amazing voice features enough embodiment of the Thin White Duke to bring each song perfectly to life, but still retain his own vocal flavour.

The absolute highlight for us was the incredible Space Oddity, paired with a stunning aerial silk display in cosmic shades of blue. Heavenly. Pun intended.

The iconic venue was filled with a broad audience mix spanning several generations – a testament to the reach, inspiration and influence of Bowie’s music and the lives he touched during his rock and roll reign.

Rebel is a glittering, intimate show which had its audience singing along to every word and dancing in their seats. Our only complaint – we wanted more.

Bowie lovers, ‘snort the glitter off your favourite vinyl’, get online now and book your tickets to this limited run Midsumma mini-masterpiece before it finishes on Sunday.

Where: The Melba Spiegeltent, 35 Johnston Street, Collingwood (stop #19 on the 86 tram)

When: 30-31 January 1-3 February, 7pm

Unveiling of the biggest rhino sculpture in Melbourne

On 2nd February 2019, the Melbourne public will be bewildered by the unveiling of The Wonderful Two, which will offer the creation of lifelong memories through a unique and interactive sculpture experience. The bronze immortalization of Najin and Fatu by Australian eco-warrior artists Gillie and Marc will be instrumental in bringing hope to the survival of rhinos!

The sculpture will be proudly launched at Republica, St. Kilda Sea Baths, right on the St Kilda foreshore, on Melbourne’s second most visited destination, St Kilda Beach.

This is an incredible location that will give visibility and create awareness for this very important cause, so Gillie and Marc are extremely grateful for this opportunity.

The sculpture is set to be aligned with the hashtag #LoveTheLast. Visitors will be asked to take a photo with the artwork and share it with the hashtag, jump starting efforts to spread critical awareness. Signage will also educate, and direct the public to a donations page set-up for Najin and Fatu, so they can live out their much-deserved final days in peace at Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Johnny’s Green Room

Australia Day ‘s tradition is always meeting in the sunshine with friends and family and enjoy a good BBQ.

This year let’s celebrate this long weekend a little differently by meeting on the rooftop at Johnny’s Green Room as it is hosting its first ever “Italian BBQ” on Sunday 27thJanuary, with shrimp on the Barbie (Italian style), Johnny’s classic drinks on tap and local DJs playing from midday til late.

Forget the usual suspects you would find at an Aussie BBQ, Johnny’s will be swapping out the burnt sausages and onion for arrosticini and seafood on the grill.

Modern-Italian bar snacks will also be on offer, including pork & veal polpetti, arancini and caprese salad. Or, enjoy a selection of antipasto: cured meats with mozzarella, bread with pickles & cheese.

Local and imported beer will be flowing on tap, as well as spritzes, highballs and a wide range of wines. Johnny’s cocktails will also be at the ready; including the crowd favourite Johnny’s Smash – a combination of gin, sparkling yuzu, ginger & mint.

Woody McDee (former 3RRR music director/The Cave 3RRR/Meredith Booker) and friends will be taking care of the music from lunch right into the night.

With breath-taking city views, good food, drinks and endless tunes – there will be no better place to celebrate the well-deserved long weekend than at Johnny’s.
