Some of the highlights that we’ve got marked down include:

The Dresses – Queen Victoria Gardens

French artist Tae Gon Kim’s ethereal work, The Dresses, shapes hundreds of fibre-optic strands into the form of three beautiful and extravagant gowns suspended in darkness – apparitions, shimmering from the realms of fantasy. Slowly the illuminated optical fibre in each dress changes colour, symbolising its history and transformation over time. Each of the dresses weaves its own story of relationships, love and intimacy – inviting adoration and adornment alongside immersion and transformation.

Skate White Night All Night – Riverslide Skate Park – Alexandra Gardens

Big hART is collaborating with Melbourne artists and skateboarders to create a new theatre show called SKATE.  The event brings projectionists, percussionists, lighting and sound to Riverslide…….you bring your skateboard.

Decade and Decadent – State Library Victoria, northern facade

Australian photographer Rennie Ellis (1940–2003) was a key figure in the nation’s visual culture and is best remembered for his effervescent observations of life during the 1970s – 90s. Although invariably inflected with his own personality and wit, the thousands of social documentary photographs taken by Ellis during this period now form an important historical record. The images in this projection have been drawn from two award-winning books by Rennie Ellis – Decade and Decadent – and highlight some of the defining images of Australian life from the ‘70s and ‘80s

Urban Creatures – City Square fountain

Dance the night away with a whole army of animated characters. For one night only the talented animators from Victorian College of Art will lure these urban creatures out to play, accompanied by the heavy dance beats of urban music.

In addition to all the installations and illuminations there’ll also be four music stages;Trip the Light Fantastic, Grooves on Bourke, Live on Lonsdale and The Blues Speakeasy Stage as well as classical performances in St Paul’s Cathedral: Silver Rain: Illuminated Opera, Luminesce and Classical Revolution; will showcase a variety of music genres including jazz, blues, funk, R+B, soul, world music, pop, hip-hop, dance, electronic, classical, country, instrumental and rock.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo marches into town!

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo marches into Melbourne this week for the first time ever!

Over the weekend, over 1,200 performers from all around the world including Australia arrived into Melbourne for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo that will take place from Friday 12 February at Etihad Stadium.  This incredible event promises to be one of the greatest spectacles ever seen in Melbourne.

In its 65-year history, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has only ever left its Scottish homeland three times touring to New Zealand in 2000 and Sydney in 2005 and 2010.

With its unique blend of military ceremony, music and entertainment, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the most famous events in the world, playing to around 220,000 people each year in Edinburgh and attracting an annual television audience of 100 million.

The Tattoo includes performers from ten regiments in the UK plus bands from Switzerland, Norway, Tonga, Fiji and all across Australia and as far flung as the Shetland Islands.  To set the scene, the extraordinary, life-size replica of the Castle façade with performers will enter the stadium by crossing the drawbridge just as they do in Edinburgh before the grand finale which will draw together the entire cast of more than 1,200 for that international song of love and friendship, Auld Lang Syne.

The World’s Largest High Heel Race

Achieving a Guinness World Record is no easy task. From deciding which challenge to try, to the training and preparation involved in beating the last record holder, it’s easy to give up and feel defeated. But what if we told you that you could easily have a Guinness World Record to your name before the month is over? Intrigued?

On February 14, The World’s Largest High Heel Race is happening and they are looking for people to participate! The race will be held at the St Kilda Festival and funds raised will go towards The Warwick Cancer Foundation, an organisation that aims to raise funds for young Australians living with cancer.

So what do you need to know before you commit?

  • The race is limited to 1500 people, so make sure you get your registrations in.
  • The race will be an official attempt for the largest amount of people running in high heels all for a great cause.
  • Yes, there is a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the largest amount of people running in high heels… 967 people, completed in Indiana, USA back in 2010.
  • You must run in high-heeled stilettos. At least 7 centimetres (2.75 inches) high and it CANNOT be over 1.5 centimetres (0.6 inches) wide at the tip. Yes, that means everyone in high heels.
  • This record is to be measured by the number of participants who complete the race. So everrrrybody counts people! Men, women, young, old, fat, thin. We don’t discriminate. Oh, you have to be 18+ to take part. Sorry kids. There will be plenty of entertainment for everybody though!

Meat Fish Wine Tasting

A couple of weeks ago the We Know Melbourne team were invited to taste the new menu at Meat Fish Wine. Located right in the heart of QV, next to their sister restaurant Red Spice QV, the restaurant and wine bar are known for their extensive wine collection (featuring over 500 wines) and top tasting dishes.

The tasting was an intimate setting, sitting down on an outside table with a couple of other well known Melbourne foodies, including @topfoodmelbourne. Each dish that was brought out was given the rundown by Chef David Schofield, explaining the detail that went into cooking it to perfection.

Some of the dishes we got to try include:

Cheese damper with bush tomato jam

Wagyu Rump Cap, Roasted Shallot Puree

Normally not a huge carnivore, we found the wagyu so tender and we couldn’t help go back for seconds.

Snapper, Smoked Cauliflower, “Noir Cracker” & Sea Foam

Char Grilled Brussel Sprouts, Lardo and Mustard Crumbs

If you are still scarred from the way your Mum used to boil your brussel sprouts and make you eat them without any garnishings or condiments, this dish will convert you to a sprout lover hands down.

Dauphinoise Potatoes

The creaminess of this dish made it one of our clear favourites of the night….. still drooling on the screen thinking of it.

Hot Chocolate Soufflé, Lime Streusel, Raspberry Sorbet

A stand out dessert dish! The sweetness of the white chocolate inside was perfectly complemented by the raspberry flavours for a foodgasm in your mouth.
