Simple Gestures Exhibition by Melbourne’s Creative Community – Raising Money for Youth Cancer

SIMPLE GESTURES: An exhibition of gestures (BIG or small) by Melbourne’s  creative communnity, raising money for youth cancer.

They say a simple gesture can go a long way, but what if you took it further?

The team behind the SIMPLE GESTURES Exhibition are doing just that, with a collection ofthoughtfully curated works of art produced by Melbourne’s creative community, with an aim to raise over $200,000 for Youth with Cancer via The Alfred Hospital (specifically The Alfred Foundation, Melanoma Ward).

Opening Wednesday 28th November and running through to Sunday 2nd December at The Compound Interest, 15-25 Keele St, Collingwood, SIMPLE GESTURES will showcase contributors from all corners of the creative spectrum who are donating a work each including designers, illustrators, photographers and fine artists. All sharing a conceptual approach to their practice and ensuring a rich curatorial diversity for the exhibition.

This is the third exhibition of its kind, following the successes of ‘Wakes Me Into’ (2007) and ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ (2008), taking inspiration from a close friend Kristen Royce, who sadly passed away from cancer at only 23.

After a 10-year hiatus, the team are back with some of the best creatives in this city including works from Anthony Lister, Caroline Walls, Jon Doubleday (UK), Kat Macleod, Tom Blachford, Bec Parsons, Max Doyle and Sean Fennessy, to name a few.

Works range from $200 to $2,000 with the fine art giclée printing of editions and framing for the show by Format Framing, an online platform helping artists print and frame their work.

The opening launch evening is on Wednesday 28th November from 6-9pm, with drinks from Sample, Everleigh Bottling Co & Blackhearts & Sparrows, and is open to the public.

SIMPLE GESTURES is also supported by other Melbourne creatives including Studio Hi Ho (Design), Masanao Hirayama (Illustrations) and Fabiano Procopio (Typeface: Durango Kid).

Paracinema Fest

A FILM FESTIVAL FOR THE WEIRDLYWONDERFUL ARRIVES IN MELBOURNE

Paracinema Fest is the latest festival to claim space in Melbourne’s thriving cinema scene, and it’s here to open the city’s film lovers’ eyes to new boundary-pushing genre films from Thursday 29 November to Wednesday 5 December.

Embracing all forms of transgressive visual media culture, Paracinema Fest is the mutation of high and low art, conjoining cinema academia with (not) guilty pleasure films and everything in between.

Highlights of the festival program include the Melbourne premiere of An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn starring Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement, and Craig Robinson. Directed by Jim Hosking (The Greasy Strangler), the film tells the story of Lulu Danger, whose dissatisfying marriage is shaken up when a mysterious man comes through her town to perform an event called “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only.”

The zombie apocalypse hits World War II in the high-powered, pulse-pounding thriller Overlord. Following a team of American paratroopers in Nazi-occupied France with only hours until D-Day, Overlord has been described as Saving Private Ryan meets 28 Days Later after its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin. It was produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and directed by up-and-coming Australian filmmaker, Julius Avery (Son of a Gun).

An unmissable title in the program is Luz, a German film that was director Tilman Singer’s thesis piece, and currently holds a 100% fresh rate on Rotten Tomatoes. An audacious feature debut, it tells the story of a young woman named Luz who works as a cab driver in a small town. Unfortunately for Luz, she has a demonic entity following her, determined to possess her. It won the Jury Award for Best Horror Feature at Fantastic Fest this year, and Paracinema Fest is its Melbourne premiere.

Paracinema spotlights the works of two very special underground filmmakers in two repertory double feature screenings. The first is The Films of Sarah Jacobson, which includes I Was a Teenage Serial Killer and Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore. A respected figure of the riot grrrl movement in 1990s New York, Jacobson wrote, produced and created her own films, which were praised by critic Roger Ebert as well as Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Featuring songs by seminal 90s punk bands including Heavens to Betsy, Mudhoney, Babes in Toyland, The Cosmic Psychos, and more, Jacobson’s films have been lovingly restored into 2K by the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA). This double feature is an international premiere.

The second double feature transports audiences to Wakaliga, a slum in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, affectionately known as Wakaliwood, and the birthplace of Uganda’s first action movie studio! The man at the heart of it all is filmmaker Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (I.G.G), Uganda’s very own Quentin Tarantino. An action film fanatic, Nabwana has directed dozens of films with the help of his community, his DIY computing genius, and using materials from the local scrapyard. Screening at Paracinema Fest are his first film Who Killed Captain Alex? (reportedly made with a budget of $200), and Bad Black, which won the Audience Award for Best Feature at Fantastic Fest in 2016.

To kick off the festival on Thursday 29 November, the screening of Quentin Dupieux’s Keep an Eye Out will be accompanied by complimentary champagne and oysters (audiences will understand the reference when they see the film!).

Boiling with energy, individuality, and fun, Paracinema Fest is ready to launch headlong into the abyss with the purest cinematic joy. Let’s get weird.

The country’s sweetest event returns

In possibly the most delicious news in more than a year for sweet-tooths, Cake Bake & Sweets Show is returning this November 2018.

Under new management, the events will be produced by Global Links Exhibitions & Conferences Organisers Pty Ltd (GL Exhibitions), an international organisation responsible for creating events in 14 countries around the world. Cake Bake & Sweets 2018 marks the company’s first foray into the Australian market and whilst key aspects of the show remain, the GLE approach will be very different.

The new Cake Bake & Sweets Show team will be fronted by industry veteran James Laing as Portfolio Exhibition Director. Responsible for launching the Good Food & Wine Show back in 2001 (before food events were cool), James is acutely aware that the success of any event depends on delivering ROI for exhibitors and sponsors while simultaneously creating memorable experiences for visitors.

The show has already confirmed culinary stars Kirsten Tibballs, Katherine Sabbath, Candice Brown (UK), and Anna Polyviou to appear, and the show will also host a myriad of workshops, live demonstrations and a host of specialty classes.

The Cake Bake & Sweets Show promises a sweet day out for foodies, families, cakers and bakers, with dedicated show features such as For the Love of Cooking zone, that offers visitors the chance to discover exciting products and learn new skills that will take their passion for cooking and baking to the next level.

The Healthy Living Zone will allow those with a keen interest in cooking the chance to explore the healthier side to baking, placing a focus on raw, free-from, and fresh desserts.

And when you thought it wasn’t possible, this year’s event just got a little sweeter, with some of the world’s best cake artists recently announced to join the already star-studded line up of national and internationally acclaimed chefs. Benny Rivera, Owner of City Cakes in New York and the multi award-winning stars of the TV series Extreme Cake Makers, Rosie Dummer and compatriot Molly Robbins are now set to join the likes of Eric Lanlard, Lorraine Pascale and Siba Mtongana for two very delicious shows!
