Unset Typologies

‘Unset Typlogies’  by Izabela Pluta, explores how the nature of photomural wallpaper enables observers to hypothesise the existence of a past and glimpse the possibility of a future while inviting us to contemplate the relentless renewal of the CBD over time. Commissioned by the City of Melbourne Public Art Program, her photomural banner depicts a transitional site, where light fittings, ceiling panels, vents and lights are suspended as a result of a building’s transformation. Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei

What do you get when you cross one of the most influential figures in contemporary art and culture with one of the leading Chinese contemporary artists of this time?  The biggest contemporary exhibition Melbourne has ever seen! This December, NGV International will be showcasing the works of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei for Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei,  before it moves onto The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. “Developed by the NGV and The Andy Warhol Museum, with the participation of Ai Weiwei, will explore the significant influence of these two exemplary artists on modern art and contemporary life, focussing on the parallels and intersections between the two artists’ practices. Voices from Afghanistan Exhibition

The Voices from Afghanistan exhibition will display over 850 objects illustrating the experiences of Australians at war and in peacekeeping operations, from Pre-Federation to the present day, with a particular focus on individual and unit stories of Victorian service and sacrifice. The  temporary exhibition is located in the  Galleries of Remembrance, a $45 million Victorian Government redevelopment that utilises 1,600 square metres of undercroft space that exists beneath the Shrine of Remembrance and will present the perspectives of participants, of those affected by the war – both in Afghanistan and in Australia – and of eyewitnesses to the conflict. Midsumma Festival

Melbourne’s annual queer celebration, Midsumma Festival returns this January for another great 2 weeks full of arts and culture spread over 85 different venues. Bringing together a mixed bag of artists and performers, the festival will include events and activities such as visual art, theatre, cabaret, live music, parties and film. Victoriana Pleasure Garden

The Victoriana Pleasure Garden exhibition launches at Tasma Terrace this Friday. The exhibition seex a fusion of nineteenth century high fashion, photography and culture from acclaimed photographer Gerard O’Connor and stylist Marc Wasiak.  Capturing the spirit of the Victoriana garden party and Spring in all its glory, this is one garden party not to be missed. ArtPlay and Little Big Shots present a selection of films for the little ones (taken from the International Film Festival for Kids in June 2015). Australian Movie and Comic Expo

If you’re into gaming, fantasy, comics, anime, sci-fi  or just a straight movie buff, you’ll want to attend the Australian Movie and Comic Expo. Formerly known as Armageddon Oz, this fan event is run by the fans for the fans with special appearances from both local and international celebrities. There’ll be costuming panels, prop making, laser skirmish, lego displays plus a special display of the Back to the Future’s own DeLorean car and the 1966 Batmobile. And for all the comic nerd there’ll be a huge comic book giveaway over the whole weekend, with more than 1000 comics up for grabs for those who arrive early! So get your costumes out, and get ready to mix with the stars, including voice over celebrities  Hal Rayle and Maggie Roswell (The Simpsons) and Melbourne’s own Tristan Jones (current artist on Mad Max Fury Road), plus many more. AFL Grand Final Hawthorn vs West Coast

Footy fans looking for something to do leading up to Saturday’s Hawthorn-West Coast Grand Final have a host of choices. Here’s a  quick look at what’s on offer, starting Wednesday afternoon. Foxtel Footy Festival The Foxtel Footy Festival, located in Yarra Park outside Gate 3 at the MCG, celebrates everything Melbourne has to offer including food, music, movies and of course football. The festival starts at 4pm Wednesday, September 30 and runs through to Grand Final Day, Saturday October 3. Toyota AFL Live Site The centrepiece of the Foxtel Footy Festival is the Live Site, featuring a number of activities, live broadcasts, player appearances and activities for kids. The Grand Final will be shown live on big screens throughout the Live Site on Saturday. Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade The Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade, proudly supported by the City of Melbourne, starts at noon, Friday, October 2.
