Chevalier at ACMI Cinemas

One of the most distinctive voices in the Greek New Wave, Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg) brings her latest film Chevalier to ACMI Cinemas from 6 October. Taking out Best Film at the 2015 London FIlm Festival, Tsangari’s newest work is set on a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea where six men – all friends – embark on a competition to be crowned the ‘Best at Everything’.  Receiving kudos for her work in contemporary Greek cinema, Tsangari collaborated closely with director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) to produce the films Dogtooth and Alps. The two filmmakers also share common creative ground with screenwriter Efthimis Filippou (The Lobster), who transforms the straightforward premise of Chevalier into a highly amusing tale of morality, class and masculinity. Oktoberfest in the Gardens

This October, Oktoberfest in the Gardens will take over Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr for a giant, beer garden party.  Now in it’s sixth year, the party will feature two massive beer halls with a large selection of imported German beers, cider and wine, plus authentic German food stalls. Entertainment wise, there’ll be roving performers, sideshow alley, silent disco and an eclectic mix of entertainment and competitions across multiple stages throughout the afternoon and evening. Inspired by their love of the traditional Bavarian festival and great beer, Oktoberfest in the Gardens has sold out the past two years, and is already sold out on Saturday, with limited tickets left on Sunday. Rocktoberfest  are a Melbourne-based business selling Oktoberfest outfits. Started by two guys out of Melbourne who knew how difficult (and costly) it was to buy lederhosen for festivals, Rocktoberfest now offers Oktoberfest goers, costumes that won’t cost a fortune, which means more money to spend on beer! Their Lederhosen and dirndls are great value at less than $50 each. The competition closed 12pm, 6th October 2016. Winner was Sharon, …

Tribute to the Starman

The audience lights dimmed, the stage lights fired up and we were immediately blown away with the familiar dirty opening riffs of Rebel Rebel. Anyone say goosebumps…? This week we were invited to check out CHANGES: Theatrical Tribute to the Music of David Bowie, a beautiful collaboration between Bare Naked Theatre, and Melbourne rock band, Robot Child running at Gasworks Art Park until 6 August. I love Bowie. Full stop. I had no idea what to expect from what was described as a ‘reimagination of his songs through the power of theatre…’ but I was about to find out. Bare Naked pride themselves in being visually a little out there. If you are expecting to see a traditional stage musical performance piece, you’ve come to the wrong show. With zero dialogue, this tribute is purely about the man and the music. The cast dance, sing and make art with their bodies and the various props they are given to work with. And the band plays. Beautifully. It’s a sweet, simple, but intellectual tribute, and Bowie …
