Interview: Alex Castro | Cine Latino Film Festival

This August, Melbourne cinephile will be treated to the first ever Cine Latino: A NewFestival of Latin American Cinema. With over 30 films from over 11 countries, the festival is dedicated to exploring the diverse and exciting Latin American cinema of now. We spoke to festival programmer, Alex Castro (former Melbourne Latin American Film Festival Director) ahead of the festival to find out his recommendations for the festival and the inspiration behind it.  This is a brand new film festival to Melbourne (and Australia). What inspired you to put together this festival? For many years now the Spanish Film Festival has presented excellent Spanish-language films from Latin American countries such as Argentina, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Colombia. But too many great films were missing out. Cine Latino: Festival of Latin American Cinema gives us the chance to screen a greater number of these quality films, plus we get to see films from Latin America that are not in Spanish, especially Brazil. The inaugural Scandinavian Film Festival returns to Melbourne this winter. More than just noir: the Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival will see new dramas, documentaries and laughs on the big screens across the Palace Cinemas. Doggy Drive-In

Don’t want to leave your dog home alone again?  This weekend Village Cinemas Australia and the RSPCA Victoria are partnering together at the Drive-in so you’ll never have to leave your best friend at home again! Splash around at Melbourne’s Hot Tub Cinemas

Transitions Film Festival returns to Cinema Nova next Friday and if you’re a documentary buff you’ll love this year’s program. Moonlight Cinemas Opening Night

Moonlight Cinemas is a quintessential summer event on the Melbourne cultural calendar. Based in the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens, the cinemas three month program screens a whole bunch of films every evening over summer, except for Mondays. The We Know Melbourne team were invited along to the opening night last Thursday to watch an advance screening of Suffragette. Slightly worried about the cooler weather in the lead up, Thursday evening presented itself as a perfect balmy evening. Red carpet arrivals kicked off the evening where each person could get their own paparazzi snap as they entered, before being ushered to the VIP section where we had sparkling wine, popcorn and bean bags to enjoy during the film. Tropfest makes a comeback

Feel the love as the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest makes a Valentine’s Day comeback. Short film fans around Australia were heartbroken when earlier this year it was announced that the iconic event was cancelled, but thanks to the generous sponsor CGU Insurance, the Festival has received a lifeline and will be back on Sunday 14 February 2016 in Centennial Parklands, Sydney (with fingers crossed a live screening in Melbourne).  Twenty-one years on, Tropfest Australia attracted a live national audience of around 150,000 people on a single night and today more than 1.6 million people have attended a Tropfest event over it’s lifetime.  “As a free, outdoor event, Tropfest makes short film accessible to all.
