Women in Film: The Fits

She Speaks First is a series of film screenings that focus on women. Films made by women, for women to empower women – and in each screening, the audience are then invited to engage in conversations which focus on the female contribution  to the cinema space. This February, She Speaks First brings ‘The Fits‘ to the screen Eleven-year-old tomboy Toni, played by a young, but powerful Royalty Hightower, is entranced by the tight-knit dance team she sees practicing in the same Cincinnati gymnasium where she boxes. Enamored by the power and confidence of the strong community of girls, Toni spends less and less time boxing with her older brother, and instead eagerly absorbs the dance routines and masters drills from a distance, and even pierces her own ears in an effort to fit in. But when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni’s desire for acceptance becomes more complicated. Gorgeously shot and with a mesmerizing score, THE FITS is a transformative experience and a marvelous portrait of adolescence. (72 min, Unrated). Following this exclusive screening, this the …

Chevalier at ACMI Cinemas

One of the most distinctive voices in the Greek New Wave, Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg) brings her latest film Chevalier to ACMI Cinemas from 6 October. Taking out Best Film at the 2015 London FIlm Festival, Tsangari’s newest work is set on a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea where six men – all friends – embark on a competition to be crowned the ‘Best at Everything’.  Receiving kudos for her work in contemporary Greek cinema, Tsangari collaborated closely with director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) to produce the films Dogtooth and Alps. The two filmmakers also share common creative ground with screenwriter Efthimis Filippou (The Lobster), who transforms the straightforward premise of Chevalier into a highly amusing tale of morality, class and masculinity. We have three double passes to give away to the the special ACMI screening on Thursday 6 October at 6:10pm. Oktoberfest in the Gardens

This October, Oktoberfest in the Gardens will take over Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr for a giant, beer garden party.  Now in it’s sixth year, the party will feature two massive beer halls with a large selection of imported German beers, cider and wine, plus authentic German food stalls. Entertainment wise, there’ll be roving performers, sideshow alley, silent disco and an eclectic mix of entertainment and competitions across multiple stages throughout the afternoon and evening. Inspired by their love of the traditional Bavarian festival and great beer, Oktoberfest in the Gardens has sold out the past two years, and is already sold out on Saturday, with limited tickets left on Sunday. Rocktoberfest  are a Melbourne-based business selling Oktoberfest outfits. Started by two guys out of Melbourne who knew how difficult (and costly) it was to buy lederhosen for festivals, Rocktoberfest now offers Oktoberfest goers, costumes that won’t cost a fortune, which means more money to spend on beer! Their Lederhosen and dirndls are great value at less than $50 each. The competition closed 12pm, 6th October 2016. Winner was Sharon, …
